Laptop to replace desktop

lak90

My current desktop:

Intel Core i5 2500

ATI 5770 1GB VRAM

4GB RAM

Laptop requirements:

- 15.6"

- sober look

- much better performance than my desktop

- max £1k, the less I spend the better :D

I would mostly use it to browse, listen music, watch videos and occassionally game.

I would like to buy from Amazon UK if possible.

I was looking into the Lenovo Y50 but maybe it's a bit overkill? I do game but not much these days, and my current desktop is still fine for me at 1080p. Also isn't the 860M a bit old now?

I would keep the laptop for 2 or more years.

Thanks for any help. :)

Don't buy lenovo atm, they have tracking software that cannot be removed - it's embedded into the bios.

I saw that but according to the article the Y50 isn't affected. Anyway I'm OK with other brands too, it's just that I saw many people suggesting that model.

@lak90

ultrabook with 840m graphics(i can play gta v on medium settings at about 50fps on my 740m so i think that this would be a good choice for what you're gonna use it)

with the remaning money get an 256gb ssd to change the hdd in it and it will be quite a beast :D

http://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-VivoBook-S551LN-Touchscreen-Ultrabook/dp/B00S10XYH2/ref=sr_1_12?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1439644546&sr=1-12&keywords=840m

ofcourse that there are more powerful options but they would look more flashy, be thicker and will be heavier

you decide

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look into them later.

Is now a good moment to buy laptops or are there new processors/graphic cards coming out soon? I haven't been up to date for a long time, you can tell from my rig. :D

You can consider this

http://mysn.co.uk/shop/xmg-p505-gaminglaptop.html

It has the room for upgradeability in the future, except the GPU and the CPU though.

i don't know about any new processors or gpu s comming out but it is a good time to buy laptops because around this time shops have "back to school" promotions

So I've being looking at the options you guys gave me. All nice laptops but I'm seriously thinking that it's way too much performance for me. I game very little these days and I don't mind lowering graphics settings when needed; up to now my desktop has been fine.

Cheaper options to suggest? Or would that not be a significant performance upgrade from my desktop?

No one? :(

Below a certain point there's a performance void. I would suggest grabbing the P650SE linked above if it's within your budget and letting it last you quite a few years.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

Thanks. I think the P650SE is overkill for me.

I'm looking at the Optimus VI from PC specialist. Cheaper than other options I've looked at but still powerful enough.

What do you guys think?

Not sure on certain components:

CPU - Is the i5 4210H enough?

RAM - Does the type matter? How much is enough? I currently have 4GB and seem to be fine, even in games. :D

Storage - Really want an SSD, both because of better performance and better reliability since I might carry it around with me. Around 200GB of total space are more than enough for me. Which one should I go for? I'm also confused because you can choose a primary disk but also a mSATA/M.2 SSD drive; what's the difference if I only want one drive in my laptop?

Optical Drive - What does "hard drive optical bay caddy" mean?

Anyone bought from this site before? Is the laptop a custom made one from the site?

Thanks. :)

If it's overkill, then get a N155SD instead. Below that is just impaling performance for little cash returns.

It's a dual core, and will be far weaker than your 2500K.

Get 8GB and be done with it.

A 250GB 850 Evo or something should be fine if you really don't want more space. You can always buy the SSD separate and request that they sell you without the HDD/SSD.

Hard Drive caddy means removing the DVD drive (ODD) to put in a hard drive slot.

The site is legit. They often sell other Clevos.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

Thanks a lot.

Things is although I've said I can spend max £1k, I realised that if I did buy a laptop for that price I wouldn't really need the power; I game very little now. :(

Not sure about the CPU, maybe it might be enough. Other than that I like that laptop from PC specialist.

i5 4210H

8GB Kingston RAM

240GB Kingston V300 SSD

NVIDIA GTX 960M

No OS

£636

I would recommend the 4720HQ for a little more headroom when it comes to things like multitasking and what not.

True but that increases the cost by a lot. I think I'll wait and see.

Is there a big difference between the 4720HQ and the 4710HQ? How do they compare with my i5 2500?

Not much.

Not very sure, but should be more powerful given that it is 2 generations ahead.

Your budget should be the main factor on the type of laptop to be purchase. My best guess is to go for ASUS products. There are durable and reliable and you will get a good deal for the spec you mentioned above.
