Free Anti-Virus Suggestion.

Koka458

I'm sick of Free Avira. It makes the cursor always work on background state [you know, the busy cursor], uninstalling it solved the problem.

So, free Anti-Virus suggestion please......And I'll not use Windows Defender!

Avast + Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Avast for general protection, Malwarebytes for more in-depth scans.

Though the best anti-virus is common sense, don't be going to sketchy websites or downloading sketchy files and you should be fine.

I just went through this a couple of months ago.  360 is an excellent free suite but it imposed too much "out of the box", nailing a lot of false positives and then not telling me about them until this program or that one refused to work!  None the less it can be tuned with a bit of work to behave the way you want it to.  I'm not sure there is a better suite out there, especially if you often put yourself at risk.  Comodo would be my second pick, not quite as focused at protection as 360 but still a pain in my butt.  I now use...  Avira ;)

System: i5 6600K@3.6 GHz, Gigabyte Z170XP SLI, 2x8 Corsair DDR 3000, Corsair Hydro H60i cooler, Rosewill CAPSTONE 750w Gold PSU, 1x 512GB SSD, 1x 2TB 7200RPM, Windows 10 Pro x64
Display: XFX R9 390 DD, triple 1920x1200 24" HP monitors (5760x1200 @ 60Hz)   Sound: Audio-gd NFB-11 -> AKG K7XX or 2.1 speaker system

I don't go to sketchy websites or download sketchy stuff, it's my friends and some kids who bring fancy stuff in their fancy flash-drives!

I think we really need a sticky on this, or recommend software in general.  I feel like this question is asked too much.

That aside:

For free AV you should either get Avira or Bitdefender.  Bitdefender is more lightweight, but it doesn't give you many options in terms of control or how it works.

If you want a paid one then either Bitdefender or Kaspersky.  I would probably go with Kaspersky just for the fact that their team has found a lot of security issues in the past.  You can also check out AVTEST, a third-party company that rates AVs.  (Bitdefender and Kaspersky are the top 2)

You will also want to scan your computer weekly, or whatever amount of time you are comfortable with,  with Malwarebytes.  Just to be clear, Malwarebytes is NOT an AV, nor should it be used like one.  So do not run it along side your AV, only use it is a scanner.  Make sure to not accept the trial it offers, and to disable it on startup.
