If you're serious about editing, more cores help but if you want it mostly for gaming then you should probably go for Intel. This is what I put together based on what you want and your price point:

CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor  ($97.46 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: ASRock 980DE3/U3S3 ATX AM3+ Motherboard  ($53.98 @ Newegg)
Video Card: XFX Radeon R9 280X 3GB Double Dissipation Video Card  ($189.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Azza SIRIUS ATX Mid Tower Case  ($40.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $549.88
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

I want to build a $400 to $550 gaming/editing pc at 1080p
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P ATX AM3+
Cpu: AMD FX-6300

Ram: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB

Gpu: R7 260x

Hard Drive: Western Digital 1 tb caviar blue

Case Corsair Spec-01

Power supply: Corsair 430W

The reason i want to upgrade is because my laptop can't handle most games at high 720p. for example Bioshock infinite at high 720p even at medium it only gets like 40 fps.

Hint 1: buy a used parts.

Hint 2: don't go with AMD. Stick to intel, if you ever want to game.
