First Time Builder Looking for some help! Budget 850$(Canada)

Hi everyone,

I am a first time pc builder looking to make a decent gaming rig. I picked some parts after some research but cannot decide on a motherboard and case. I would also like any tips or new builds that may be better for me. My budget is 850$ CDN.

(Don't know if its a major issue but)

Looks great but some compatibility issues with the case:

  • MSI H97 PC MATE ATX LGA1150 Motherboard has an onboard USB 3.0 header, but the NZXT Source 210 Window ATX Mid Tower Case does not have front panel USB 3.0 ports.
  • The NZXT Source 210 Window ATX Mid Tower Case supports video cards up to 330mm long, but video cards over 230mm may block drive bays. Since the Gigabyte Radeon R9 280 3GB WINDFORCE Video Card is 284mm long, some drive bays may not be usable.

This is not a big issue, just there's no usb 3.0 on the front of the case and the second issue is just that the card will block the first few slots in the drive cage but you can use the slots underneath.

If you want a simpler and cleaner looking case like the Source 210, I'd look into either the older 200r or the newer 100r from Corsair as they in a similar price range

I say look on craiglist for a GPU, you can generally get them to test bench it for you, I bought a r9 290 for 220 from a guy for my new rig im building, he test benched it to show me it worked. saved me 200 bucks

My article on subscription based services and why they are the way forward http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/382625-what-the-future-holds/

lots of refurbished and open boxed m/boards to save you money.

get a SSHD unless you can afford both a SSD & HDD

look for the deals, shop around

choose a form factor you need, a colour scheme you like and thin out the list.

intel is more futureproof nowadays and more choice on m/boards.

got to love Asus components
