What is the best free office suite?

Obysk

I was just about to purchase Microsoft Office 2013 and realized I don't really want to spend in excess of $140CAD for a suite of programs of which I would mostly use only Word.

I realize there are free web based word processors, but I prefer an application based solution.

So...what is the best free office suite?

It really depends on what you like. There's openoffice which is quite popular and libreoffice too. I'm sure you can find plently of lists online so just try them out since they're free anyway. You have nothing to loose unless you're paying per GB ;)

The Word pad built into windows does quite well, basically a stripped down version of word.

Suppose this would be a good time to say, whether it applies to the op or not,

If you're a college student going to a public uni here in California, you can get 3 free years of office 365. It might be available in more places, but I only know for sure that you can get it here.

openoffice is my choice. You could go the 365 route as well. Also the locations under the pictures. They match..

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

Go the subscription route or just buy Word standalone.

Choosing between LibreOffice and Open Office is like deciding what foot to shoot yourself in.

This is probably the only area of software where there is just no good alternative. You can use another solution and even be comfortable using it, but compatibility with everyone else is a big thing in the world. I used Open Office for years, and Libre office for a little bit when I was stuck on Linux for 6 months, both poor pieces of software when compared to Microsoft.

Dude, if you go to school you can get it for free.  If your school is private or too small your school might have a portal like mine which says "Get office 2013 for free!"

WPS office is amazing. http://www.wps.com/

Unfortunately, they don't currently support OS X if that's what you're running.

To me Libreoffice and Openoffice always feel a bit unpolished, and sometimes have issues if you have to trade files with someone who uses MS office. I do use both Libreoffice (OS X) and WPS (Windows/Linux) on at least a weekly basis and greatly prefer WPS.

I've used wps, libre and calligra office suites. And i think WPS is one of the better ones but I like libre more.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

WPS office is highly compatible with MS, but libreoffice is true Open software without any limitation like WPS does.

Wow! Lots of opinions on this topic.

I'm not in school, so free Office 2013 is not an option, I'm using Word Pad now but I need a little more functionality, and I run Windows 8.1 x64.

I downloaded WPS but haven't installed it yet. I may give WPS a try for a while and if it doesn't sit well with me I may bite the bullet and buy standalone MS Word.

Doesn't apply to everyone. I go to a small private school and I cannot get free Office. Doesn't really matter though, because about 4 years ago I bought a triple-licence of Office 2010 Home & Student.
