Upgrade or get new laptop and do desktop? (Updated)

handymanshandle

So I had a thread like this one a few weeks ago. I have revised and decided that in effort to save money and get the best of both worlds I'd use on laptop as a desktop and properly upgrade another.

The laptop I would choose to be used as a desktop would be the one which had a broken screen which happens to be my AMD based Samsung.

The upgrades on the Samsung would be an A10 5750M, 8GB of Ram and 250GB SSD.

The laptop I would have left; the HP. Would naturally remain a laptop. Since the HP has some cosmetic issues I would address those issues (Chipping and Scratched Paint, and a couple keys where the letters have worn off.)

The only upgrades to the HP would be an i7 2630QM and a 250GB SSD since I've already put the max 8GB of ram in it already. Since finding keys would be too difficult I would just replace the whole keyboard.

Here is a Break down of price for each laptop (I also included accessories which were priced into the Samsung list since that would be the desktop filler.

Samsung

  • AMD A10 5750M ($67.88)

  • DDR3L 1600MHz Kingston 8GB [4GBx2 kit] ($71.99)

  • Samsung 850 Evo 250GB SSD ($99.99)

  • Western Digital 2TB My Passport Ultra ($99.00)

  • Logitech Solar Keyboard [K750] and Performance MX mouse ($159.98)

  • IC Diamond 24 Carat ($15.98)

Total : $527.74

HP

  • Intel i7 2630QM ($91.99)

  • Samsung 850 Evo 250GB SSD (113.00)

  • 1 case of Rust-Oleum Dark Grey Spray Paint for Platics ($28.62)

  • Replacement keyboard ($17.99)

Total: $238.59

Total of Both: $766.33

So the real question is, Would this set up be sufficient for my purpose (which would be some content creation and other general use with some gaming.)
Or would I be better off doing something else, like sticking to my X99 build and doing the work that needs to be done to the HP (even though I don't really care for it in general and it seems that it's going to be a pain to take apart and put back together. ) Or getting a laptop that is less than $1,050 (I.E Toshiba P50T-BST2GX4)? Also as a bit of a side note, I would use my 39" LED TV as the monitor for the Samsung.

how much is ur budget and stuff..

“It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”

I'm considering either a XPS 15 or 13 or Toshiba P50. My only issue is possibly trying to use the laptop in Europe (France specifically). Apple makes life a little easier with an adapter kit but I don't think this exist for Toshiba or Dell...

That HP is likely not to cool the i7 very well if you plan to stress it much. Be wary of this.

Yeah, the i5 2430M in the HP runs rather hot frequently which is sort of why I'm considering dropping this project or at least half of it.

While I wouldn't mind starting a new thread about the three options I mentioned earlier I'm sure I could find some threads that might solve my question. Meh is all I really have to say...

Your best bet is a refurbished last-gen model of some kind of PC which you use for all purposes. You can sometimes find decent machines for like $800 USD on ebay or something. If you get lucky and find a good Clevo, the power cord (not the brick) is all you'd need to change as far as I remember if you're switching between italy/US/etc.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

THE INFORMATION GUIDES: SLI INFORMATION || vRAM INFORMATION || MOBILE i7 CPU INFORMATION || Maybe more someday

Yeah, I don't really know what I can afford yet. I would like to be able to afford the UHD XPS 13 but I figure if I can't, my Samsung would be a fine candidate for upgrading and fixing.
