Custom Computer Desk Mod

PeggersXtreme

Hey everyone just thought I would post about my current project. I have seen a lot of these computer desks that have the pc in the desk such as the Red harbinger cross desk and other peoples own mods so decided for my next pc I would like to build my own custom desk but wanted to make it as original as possible so I decided I would make it around a racing theme I am going to paint the desk a Ferrari red and have black racing stripes on it so far I have built the frame and the top case part so I have attached some photos of the build so far.

not often you see a white desk case. Awesome.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

That's just the undercoat, I did consider white but was concerned about the paint yellowing overtime so decided I'm going to paint it a Ferrari Red color and add black racing stripes. I thought it would be quite cool as I play a lot of racing games more than any other type of game so it would be a bit like a racing sim I'm going to add a slide out table for the racing wheel.

Custom PC:

Intel Core i7 5960X GTX1080 Strix | 64gb 2400mhz DDR4 Corsair Vengeance Ram | Samsung S951 256gb M.2 | 4TB WD Blue SSHD | EVGA Supernova G2 1300watt PSU | Acer XB270HU | Corsair K95 RGB | Corsair M65 RGB |

In terms of hardware it is going to have a EVGA Super Nova 1000watt PSU,  Asus ROG X99 motherboard haven't decided on which of the x99 platform CPU's yet 32gb of DDR4 ram not decided on brand yet, 2 GTX 980's a 240gb Kingston HyperX SSD for boot drive and then two 2tb WD black drives for games and files and then to cool it all I will be doing a custom loop with dual 360mm radiators and a D5 Pump.

Well it has turned out to be a disaster, whether turned nasty whilst the desk was outside and wet with paint and unfortunately it got destroyed by the whether. but that doesn't end my desk build I have started working on Desk 2.0 (Project Yellow Panther) I have learnt from a few errors I made in the last version and hopefully my new desk will be built and up and running with my new components soon.

Looks cool. Will you be putting glass on the top? Also having the monitors on top of the table would mean that you would need to look up a bit. I guess if you get monitors that pivot down you should be alright. Could i also suggest some fancy leds in the box once all parts are in <3.

[spoiler=] Live mine better <3 shhhhhhh. Check it out for some ideas.

since you used pine (at least thats what it looks like in the pics) why not sand it down and start over rather than scraping the whole desk?

Why not invest $300 more in GPU's by going SLI 980 Ti's? The performance difference is miles.

That's probably what I will do now originally it wasn't suppose to take this long and the 980ti's weren't out but now they are so would make a lot more sense than going 980's :)

I used several coats of Plasti-kote to paint the desk which wont sand off it just simply melts to the sand paper making more of a mess so I scrapped that idea and I have completely re-designed the desk, It's almost built so I will upload some pictures as soon as it is done :)

Anyone had experience with Hard-line Acrylic water cooling? trying to decide whether to go with standard flex tubing or acrylic tubing. Is Acrylic tubing easy to bend? Thanks

I actually posed this question the other day. From the responses i got it is a good chunk more expensive. you have to buy a bending kit and a good one goes for around $100 USD. that is a lot but if you want to do more hard tubing in the future its a solid investment.

My main concern with hard tubing is doing upgrades and leaking as soft tube goes over the fitting rather than in the fitting as far a I know, also if I were to do soft tubing would 3/8" ID and 1/2" OD be the best option?  I have only ever water-cooled once on my i7 3770k and GTX580 and I used the 3/8" ID 1/2"  thanks

Its mainly preference on the diameter of the tubing used. i would do a bigger tube i think. i like 1/2"ID tubing. but its only bc of the thickness of the tubes not really about performance. i know when i do my next build I'm doing soft tubing for the cost savings over hard tubing. even if its just 100 thats another radiator. Keep in mind if you want straight runs and hard angels you can get fittings that will do most of that.

ok thanks, I am going for two 480mm rads to cool the system which is likely to be a 5960x and two 980ti's, originally I was going to use two 360mm rads and two 480mm rads but this would be a bit overkill imo.

So the parts are all ordered and all the wood for the desk is cut ready for assembly but I have one question. Is there an Issue with the MSI x99 Xpower I have had all my parts on order for 2 weeks now and it seems to be the motherboard holding everything up I checked a few other website and it seems to be out of stock everywhere I checked, it will be disappointing if I cant get that board as none of the other boards really have all the features I want.

If it is not out of stock on the website you ordered from then it should be fine. But make sure it didn't say back ordered. If it was backordered then it could be a while before you end up getting your motherboard.

It was originally in stock but then I received an email saying it was awaiting delivery from the suppliers

Unfortunately I can't buy from stores such as Newegg or NCIX as I live in the UK and our choice of computer stores is fairly limited and usually prices are insanely inflated by tax :( The main stores we have for components is Scan.co.uk or overclockers.co.uk, That exact same board in the UK costs about $465 not including shipping charges which are usually around $7-$8 my whole build would be $1000 cheaper if I lived in the U.S. or Canada that's how inflated our prices are.
