The 290's will destroy the 960 all day. Get a nice aftermarket r9 290.

really isn't much competition between the 290s and the 960. The best value option for 1080 is what Archangel1994 said, the r9 280x

Bleigh!  Ever hear of AC series?

ok so if i can get the r9 280x and the r9 290 to the same , should i then go with the r9 280x ? . And what about a 770?

290 will destroy a 770 too. Get a 280x.

770 is about equal to a 280x.

you can get good deals on 290's right now. in spite of the reviews you see on the web, and advice given by people who don't own the 960............... it's not really all that great for max settings on a lot of new games at 1080p.

Yes, the 280x is better ( my newegg email has one for 189 less 20 for a final price of $169 after rebate ).   I  would however buy a 290  and not look back.

The 280X performs slightly better than the 770 above 1080p, but they're pretty much identical at 1080p. The 290 will destroy the 960 at 1080p, and will beat out the 280X/770 as well comfortably.

Dude, it's a no brainer

Get a 290 with a aftermarket cooler and OC it.

Is the 290x worth the extra money compared to the 290 non x?

That very much depends on how big the price difference is and perhaps which brand you're choosing

I went to newegg and had a look.......... you can get a 290 for 269/249 after rebate......................... the new AMD cards must be coming quick. Think they might want to be trying to cash in on nvidia's faux pas?

Ok , so im either gonna buy a r9 290 and get a CM hyper 212 evo instead of my stock cooler on my cpu

Or im just gonna get a r9 290x

on one hand side it would be good to get something different than the stock cooler , but on the other hand it´s been working fine with stock cooler for 2 years soon

Intel had different stock coolers. If you got one with a big lump of copper in it I wouldn't worry about changing it. All aluminum on the otherhand............

*bump*

280x, 290(x) are all much better than the 960 in raw performance terms, and the 290(x) absolutely destroys the 960. (280 > 960 because the 280 has 50% more vram, but they're pretty similar in terms of raw performance)

Is the 290x worth it over the 290? Well it depends on how much more it costs. If it's >10% more than the 290, then I would say no, but that's just me.

What are your thoughts?

the r9 290 is overkill for 1080 gaming.

r9 280x would be adequate and save you some coin.

comparing the 960 and the r9 280x I belive the r9 280x beats it in performance however the 960 uses less power and runs cooler.

FYI my r9 280x XFX DD super-mega-overclock-ultra edition runs at under 60 degrees and is much much quieter than my stock i5-750 cpu cooler.

doesnt seem to be overkill if you look at the fps charts , for different games run at 1080p

besides that the r9 290 only costs 10% more than the 280x

if the local price difference is only 10% then definitely get an r9 290

here its $330 for an r9 280x and $440 for an r9 290 - 30% more expensive

You are right - the r9 290 really isn't "overkill" when you look at the benchmarks I guess - It all depends on how much you value being at 60fps vs 50fps and if the difference in price is big enough.

The r9 290 might be the better choice because it allows a little more life span where as the r9 280x is already dated and struggling - either way the 960 is not going to perform even as well as the r9 280x

Being mindful the below results are at very high / ultra quality settings.

one thing i notice , is that the difference between the r9 290 and the 290x ist really small, so why is it even worth buying the 290x over the 290 ?

the problem is with the reference cooler. the reference cooler can barley keep an r9 290 cool and the 290x runs hotter than the stock cooler can handle. What is actually happening here is that the 290x is being declocked due to heat to as slow if not slower than the r9 290.

if you check benchmarks for a review on a non-reference r9 290x such as the Tri-x by Sapphire the difference is greater.

With the heat under control you can see the r9 290x can be pushed hard and well above its heat-limited factory clock.

so the green one is overclocked further yet , than when you just get the card (tri-x 290x)?

the thing is , if i buy a 290x i dont have money to put more fans in my system , atm i have a 140 intake and a 120 outake , thats it

on the other hand i got money to buy a coupple of fans if i go with the r9 290
