I've also experienced this problem, clean out the cache of your browser and it should fix itself :)

If the video was only shot in 720p it won't give you higher options.

Firefox and Chrome at this point, are both very fast browsers. If you have a slow browsing experience using one of these, it is not the browser. Typically slow down in modern browsers is caused by people piling a ton of add-ons onto the browser, adware/malware, or other issues with the computer that the user has neglected to take care of.

thanks for the quick answers. the maximum of 720p is a thing for every single video on youtube in my case unfortunately, but only since i changed to html5 as mentioned before. the reasones for slow browser experience you gave make sense to me, however the only add-on i am using right now is add-blocker and that is a thing since day one it has been released, also I do not use any adware and stuff like that. I think I might do a quick rant call to telekom tomorrow ^^

I would hope you don't use adware... adware is bad, essentially a virus but with some key differences. A lot of people don't even realize that they do have issues with adware/malware. Very honestly it sounds like either your installation is messed up or you have a virus/adware/malware of some sort that is messing things up. Hard to tell what it is for sure. Honestly, I would uninstall your browser, do a scan with your normal anti-virus, then do a scan with the free version of Malware-Bytes, then reinstall your browsers and see what happens then.
