R9 290 as it's a much faster card.

r9 290, though preferably a different cooler.

XFX's DD cooler is very good.

R9 290 will be significantly faster than the 280X. It also has the GCN architecture which will support technologies like FreeSync and TrueAudio. Also, considering the price difference between the 280X and a 290 is $50 or less if you grab them on sale I would say there is literally no reason to go with the 280X over the 290. The 290 has another advantage, which is the fact that it will support the basic functionality of DX12, which is going to be a big deal in the future. Just to clarify, the problem with the extra features of DX12 is that they need specific hardware made for them.

definitely go for the 290. its got a heck of a lot more horsepower under the hood, but doesn't use any more electricity than a 280x/7970 (even less in many cases because of Powertune 2.0)

R9 290...much faster, more vram...just plain better...the xfx card is doing perfectly fine...gigabyte winforce or sapphire tri-x are better but if the xfx fits better in your price range then i'd go with that one, no problem!
