Slow internet

Hey guys! I'm having a bit of trouble with my internet, it have always been like this as I can remember, since I got the computer in february, but the issue is that my internet is fast as long as I'm alone on the internet, while I'm alone I can be watching 2 different twitch streams on high quality, listen to music, have a lot of tabs open and a few other games and play league at the same time, which is great! But as soon as I play league, got everything closed and someone else like 1 of my 2 brothers watches youtube or plays some kind of game I start lagging.

1. No it's not a torrent or any kind of download any of my brothers use, my youngest brother uses an ipad too and him is enough to make me lag.

2. I cannot get an ethernal cable, to many obstacles and kinda hard to set up so my mom wont allow me, no I cannot convince her.

3. It's sometimes fast even if they're both on the internet and I'm playing league, rarely but happends.

4. None of them lag, if they do its really rare.

5. I'm about 15-20 meters away from my router.

6. My 2 brothers is about 12-20 meters away from the router.

7. My router is an Hitron Technologies Cve 30360 and my network card is an D-Link DWA-160.

8. When I lag it's usually really bouncy, it goes to 50 which is my usual ms, but jumps up to 200-300 sometimes even to 3k and so on and goes down to 50 ms again.

9. I got a desktop computer.

10. My internet is 50 up and 10 down when I'm alone.

If you need more information just ask, I'll do everything to get this fixed.

Now, since D-link is known for having bad products and a lot of problems, and it's an usb most of you will probably tell me to get a new network card and it'll work, but it's kinda odd if it works when I'm alone, I'm not sure if getting a new network card will work, and I wanna be almost sure that this will work before I pay a lot of money for one.

I've been struggling with this forever, it would be nice to be able to play my games when I wanted to without having issues, at the same time other people in my games also get's punished by this because sometimes I even get forced to just AFK with all that lag.

Thank you on advance :)

Well, WiFi isn't as stable generally speaking compared to a hard wired connection so that doesn't help you to begin with.  Having your family jumping on there and streaming only exacerbates the issue.  You might want to try the hardwired route just to test it (move your PC to the router temporarily) if you do not experience your lag you will have solved the issue.  If the lag continues when you're hard wired you'll have to explore other options like replacing the hardware or at least testing other pieces to see if the problem persists.

Moving my big desktop pc and screen and everything under the stairs by the router would be really hard itself, also I wont get to do that anyways. The router got this wire that goes from the livingroom upstairs and down the stairs and it reaches exactly at that place, and even if I got to move the router I wouldn't be able to as the the livingroom dont get internet if so.

Just buy a long ass cord to test it.  Tell your Mom it's only temporary.

  • 2 weeks later...

Make sure any ethernet cables doesn't have any sharp bend in the line. That can cause the signal to degrade during transmission.

It seems like you may need a separate router/access point. Because that access point is built into your modem, it's likely that it is quite under powered. Even getting a cheap WRT54G could improve your experience because it will take some of those tasks and move them off to a separate device.

Try powerline internet. Its a great alternative to wireless or ethernet.

Also make sure that you aren't using up all of your allocated bandwidth (the amount of data the ISP allows you to transfer to your network at one time).
