>Is within VM

>Gives me upgrade option

What do.

I'm not the most experienced with VMWare, but I'm pretty sure I can't overwrite the host OS accidentally, right?

-snip-

It's a good thing you are running a VM, you can try to upgrade an find out what's gonna happen.

A VM is completely seperated of the Host OS, unless you in some way tied your VM to your physical HDD...

But anyhow you should be fine.

With WMware Workstation, you'll need to do a custom install, since there is no prior OS to upgrade off of, unless you are running the setup.exe on a Windows 8/8.1 VM. To create a valid VM though, that will pass the installation process, you need to set it as expecting a Windows 8 OS. Setting it to "Other 64-bit" will cause it to fail when initializing devices.

Which is allowed with VMWare, though, not under the "Typical" option when creating a new VM, however it's easy to change (Settings > Hard Disck > Use physical disk)

I'm aware, the install worked fine.

The post was made through the confusion of why there was an upgrade option present.

Upgrade from 8. The W8 tech preview was the same, with an option to upgrade from 7. Of course, in a VM this makes little sense, unless you simply don't want to create a new VM, but if you're testing on an actual machine, it makes plenty of sense.
