First Timer Web Hosting Help!

Bdgr

So I bought a domain from GoDaddy.  I didn't get web hosting or anything else because it's simply too expensive for what I want to do with it.

So I want to host the website from my computer, but I have no idea how.

I have the code for the website...That's it.

I've looked online and none of it really makes sense to me so right now, I have WAMP server and Apache installed...

I don't know what they are or how to use them...

I call my PC Buddy.   Why?  Who knows?

simply you gotta port forward 80 or 443 depending on your website (HTTPS or regular HTTP) and type your IP address into go daddy's dns page (to @ record)

Hosting on your home network is really not advised and comes with tonnes of security and technical issues. You're far better off getting hosting by a bigger provider.

It's really just so I can play around with php and learn HTML/CSS a little better whilst being able to show my friends what they think.

I know there's some security risks but it's no big deal right now.

I do actually have access to an FTP server but I'd have no idea how to use that to set it up.

Okay I don't quite understand where I have to go on GoDaddy's website.

Plus, how do I link the HTML doc to the GoDaddy Domain?

you dont.

you need to have a working webserver on your host machine and you need to port forward (80 for example) to your machine (you might need to add firewall exceptions on your pc too) then you gotta type your WAN IP adress there.

Alright so I have a WAMP server up and running and it's linked to the HTML File I'm using for the index, what's the next move exactly?

You should be putting your site on a VPS. They're really cheap. ~7$ a month for a 1gb will do you good. If you need any help what so ever with web hosting / networking I'm a nice guy and can help you out.

As Ssoele said, it is normally a really bad idea to host on your home machine... plus unless your isp has given you a static IP then you will need to constantly change the IP address that your domain is pointed at, allowing up to 24 - 48 hours each time for dns roll over to take effect. On top of that, hosting on windows is a really bad idea for basic websites, linux server gives really nice (normally) secure platform to run simple sites off of it. As with any of these, if it is your first time messing about with this sort of thing you are better of going to a dedicated platform, seeing how it works there and then trying to replicate it over time yourself.

Have a google for "free web hosting", there are load of options there that will suit your needs, cost you nothing and let you get up and running much faster.

As for where you put the IP address in, once you have logged into your godaddy account, you will have a control panel, in there somewhere you will have the ability to add the A record that will let you point the domain at your website, wherever you choose to put it.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice anyway guys :)

I decided to go for free hosting for now.

If anyone can recommend any really good paid hosting services (preferably one that uses filezilla for the FTP) I'd love to hear about it!

Here's my website so far though: http://onyxwarestudios.com/

bare in mind a couple of weeks ago i'd never used HTML, CSS or Javascript
