New amp for my stereo speakers

Pieterv24

Hey everyone

I am planning on overhauling my sound setup.

I am currently using 2 Bose ML3(Studiocraft 300ST) speakers.

Powered by a JVC AX-R332 Amp. (2x100 W if i am right)

I am planning on replacing my amp however I can't seem to find someone that suits me.

maybe you guys have some sugestions.

The speakers have a impedance of 4-8 ohm and recommend a amt wattage of 15-60 Watts.

What I am looking for in an amp is realy quite simple. I want something I can shove under my monitor(Small)

besides that I am not looking for that much more. maybe if available a second input so I can connect my phone to it.

O and please as cheap as possible while still maintaining decent sound.(I don't have much funds atm so a $2000 amp won't do)

Thank you in advance for you awnsers.

Have a looj at the Cyrus 6a very good, award winning amp, trust me you wont look back.

Only issue is it will leave you wanting more, so you will have an itch to upgrade them speakers.

If you can listen to this amp in a demo room, you will have your wallet out within a few minutes guaranteed.

The lepai 2020A+ is powerful enough for home use and very cheap.

Well, the OP's going from a 2x100W amp, and his speakers are rated at 15-60Watts. I don't think the Lepai is a good choice of upgrade, with only 2x10W...

it's 2x 20 I think, hence the name 2020

You could look into an Emotiva Mini X A-100, it has wonderful reviews and is 100w per channel @ 4 ohms, 50w per channel @ 8 ohms.

It's ~$150-$219, not sure if that's out of your price range.

I'm not entirely sure if they have them in the Netherlands though.

I would not be the first time I import something from outside of the netherlands.

however taxes are quite nasty thats why I do prefer it if something is available inside of the EU

that way i don't have to pay taxes. :D

It's 2x20 watt but just because his speakers are rated at 15-60 watt doesn't mean he needs 60 watts. The thing about power amps is that to get something better than the Lepai you have to spend at least 5x the amount so it's hard to recommend that when most people won't use past 20 watts. He also said he wants something small and most high powered speaker amps are big. I think Topping amps are pretty well regarded but those are closer to $100.

I thought this was a very interesting amp.

http://www.teac.com/product/a-h01/

This is a 2x 60w (4 ohm) or 2x 30w (8ohm). I just found this thing so interesting after reading about it and haven't felt like plunking down 300 bucks to try it myself. if this works well it could be really great with some suitable speakers.

This also has various input options so hooking up a phone is likely possible. although, I'm unsure whether it would sound good. it's also a dac with USB input.

I wrote this in my review, Lutkeveld provided the data on the Lepai: "Per channel ~8W in 8 ohm, ~15W in 4 ohm" (I guess he tested it or something), I just went with the middle number, 2x10W.

I'm all good with the Lepai, price vs performance wise. True it's hard to find better value. But as with other power supplies (I consider an amp as a power supply), it got its limit.

This is the Bose ML3, the speakers OP have:

*put it in spoiler because of the size. Couldn't find smaller picture.

4-8 ohms @85dB, I'm guessing that's a lot of currents needed to drive it properly. I honestly don't think the Lepai can handle it properly. It will give sounds, of course. Just not as good as the 2x 100W OP used previously

I got my facts from the TA2020 datasheet. There is someone who tested it, see this vid:

Power output is mostly limited by voltage (V^2/2*Z), if you want more output you have to increase voltage. A TK2050 or TPA3116 would be a good choice for an upgrade from the Lepai.

The difference between 15 and 60W is pretty noticable (+6dB) but it's not the end of the world. Since OP is already used to 100W, I'd recommend not going for anything below 30W or so.

If you know that you never turned your volume further than 1/3 or so, you could go with the Lepai but it will probably be a downgrade.

The real value is going DIY if you want that.

I actually do like diy stuf. however the problem is that I don't know what to look for then.

Have a look for TA2020, TPA3116, TK2050 or IRS2092 based PCB's on eBay.

My choice would be a TPA3116 with a 19v laptop PSU brick.

I expected the Lepai amp to be physically larger. Interesting.

It's about the same width as a 5.25" drive slot. In theory, it could be modded to be installed in the PC's casing, in one of the drive slots, get the electricity from PSU (tried that, and it worked), extra coolness....
