Upgrading my laptop's SSD and Ram

kbgarcia05

Hi, i am having a hard time loading into games with my lenovo z500 with i7 processor. I think it is because of its poor hard drive. also when im searching in the windows 8 search bar, it will lag for 8-10 seconds before i can type in the search bar. Do you think it is because of my laptop's poor hard drive? or the whole laptop?

2nd scenario :

When im playing dota 2 or cs:go on steam.  Cs:go have atleast 2-3 minutes of wait time before i can open the game and also the same when loading to the game. In dota 2, it's about 1-2 minutes. But when im in game, it is very smooth. only the loading wait time.

When opening other apps like calculator and paint or some MS office stuff. it would take a while.

Well either you need to clean out your cache with Ccleaner or Advanced system care or your hard drive is about to die. But some lag is expected as they install 5400RPM drives in laptops (which are horrible). So switching to an SSD will help a lot! :)

Have you tried defraging the hard drive? If that doesn't help then your HDD is probably dying.

Try HDDScan or something similar, I'm not exactly sure since it's been a while since I've done HDD testing. :D

appreciate it dude! thanks for all the help. but, one last thing. is 120gb enough for just my OS and my 2 main games that i play? dota 2 and cs:go is like 20gb or something. planning to buy a 120gb samsung evo ssd. and upgrade my ram 4gb to 8gb (since it is upgradable) is it a good choice?

PS: i'm pretty sure it's ram or my hard drive since when i am already in the game, it runs smoothly. problem is only when loading INTO the game

It's more likely that it's your hard drive. 120gb is enough for the stuff you said. I run 60gb for OS and programs while games are on hard drive so you will be fine with 120. :)

Replace the HDD first and see the difference, then later on add RAM if you want to. An SSD will cut down loading times by a lot.
