I just bought an older Linksis router. What are some simple steps to turn it into an access point from my main router on the other side of the house?post-82070-0-20926900-1409255494.jpg

I would like to help, but the best help would come from Google. Almost all wireless devices can be turned into an WAP or AP. Normally there is an feature in the UI to change it to it. Some website actually has a list of wireless devices that can be imaged too do this.

Have a go at Google, didnt want to give to much help as it is better to learn it that me telling you how to do it.

Look into DD-WRT for that router, its a custom firmware which lets you do much more than what the current firmware will let you do. They are very popular for hacking, but it may not be the simplest process so make sure you are comfortable with the instructions and consequences first.

What are the "consequences"?

I'm sharp enough to figure it out AND blow up my house at the same time...

When messing around with the firmware of any device there is always the small possibility of bricking it. If you follow the guides you should be good.

I see that is a wireless G router.  That may be too old for newer products, fyi.

There are things all over Google on how to do this.  This is a non detailed version:

Go to your main router and adjust the DHCP IP range so you can give your AP a static IP.

Assign AP a static IP within the range you created that is outside your main router's DHCP range.

Make the default gateway of your AP the IP address of your main router.

DHCP on your AP must be off.

This will need to be done in a way/order so you don't make the AP inaccessible during installation.  If you fuck up you can always reset it.

a few ways :

buy a power to ethernet adapter and plug both ends in one with the internet connected router and one with this lynksys,
then on the new one turn of DHCP and rename all the wifi settings to what you want.

= sorted.
