Reddit and Imgur created a research partnership, its called DERP

AlexGoesHigh

Reddit and Imgur may be home to fairly strange corners of the internet, but they're still filled with deeply valuable information about the world and how we all use the web.

both site in a nutshell, which is why i find this incredible, they are also getting assistance from twitch, fark and stack exchange

the Digital Ecologies Research Partnership AKA DERP, "is an alliance of platforms supporting the academic exploration of communities online for the betterment of the internet at large." according to their site.

aside from the name, this as serious as a non profit organization can be, they want to make it more easy for researches to gather public data, on the affiliated sites, all of the data they share is public, and they want that all of the research made with said data to be publicly available, DERP is already being use by researchers from stanford, columbia, MIT as well as others,

i find this awesome, since all of the current affiliated sites, hold the largest communities on the web, this could lead to very interesting social projects,

Sauce: The verge, DERP

this is one of the greatest thing that has happened to me recently, and it happened on this forum, those involved have my eternal gratitude http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/198850-update-alex-got-his-moto-g2-lets-get-a-moto-g-for-alexgoeshigh-unofficial/ :')

i use to have the second best link in the world here, but it died ;_; its a 404 now but it will always be here

public data = google, rumours about google / youtube buying twitch........ yeahhhh.......

you're looking at this at the wrong angle, the public data are post, threads and everything you can se on the sites, this just index them better, also if google does buy twitch, it would change nothing on this project

But will the data be available to anyone who wants to access it? Or just for some selected few?

IMO anyone should be able to access this data since it's the product of the public. Neither Reddit or Imgur creates content - they just give the platform for internet users to share content, so internet users should be able to access that information.

i wasnt being serious xD but yeah i can already tell that youtube has bought twitch, because this new policy regarding VOD's has messed up several of my highlights and is effectively nullifying highlighting for the main game i stream...

What means "DERP"?

...Am I getting too old?

It's a word Matt and Tray (creators of South Park) used to indicate stupidity. For example someone hits his head and goes "derp!" or in a comic or whatever you can write "derp" to mean "what he said is stupid".

I apparently derped on the definition of derp.

I would call this a derpception.
