Calling all Gigabyte GPU owners

OhNoesItsDobby

For anyone who owns one, how good is the acoustic performance of Gigabyte's newer, high-end cards like the R9 290 or GTX 780?

I ask because for my planned build, I'm looking at an R9 290, but would like to get the whole system as quiet as I can. I currently have a Windforce GTX 660 by Gigabyte, and while it performs pretty admirably, at load it has a noticeable coil whine. Do the newer Windforce cards suffer from the same issue? According to most reviews I've read, it's a pretty quiet cooler in terms of dBA, but none of them mention any coil whine.

So, how it do?

If you get an R9 290 get sapphire hands down. It's pretty quiet and fantastic in performance.

Heard that Gigabyte is slightly above average when it comes to GTX 780. I've heard more praise for MSI 780 than Gigabyte.

The only 290 cards to get are the Tri-X and Vapor-X.  The Windforce is too loud and doesn't cool as well as the Sapphire cards.

Hmm, I'll consider it, but the Gigabyte one is still a little cheaper. Plus I like how it looks. :3 On which note, there's also the MSI Twinfrozr card which seems to be excellent for silence. Can anyone verify this too?

And yet they have a 'cool-ish' name.

Windforce...

I had a Gigabyte card and it was one of the best cards I ever owned. Very very cool and silent.

I guess.

But Tri-X is misleading! It should be Tri-fan

Would there be any actual benefit from going with a Gigabyte GPU when I get my next GPU, since I have a gigabyte motherboard?

As opposed to say, Asus or EVGA. (barring price, assume reference cards)

Nope, wouldn't make a difference.  There's no additional improvement to having matching brands unless their software links together, such as having all Logitech peripherals that only need one piece of software for them all.

Interesting. What about having an Asus mobo, gpu, monitor, for the Gsync thing? Just curious.

It really doesn't make a difference.  G-sync only works with Nvidia GPUs.

ahhh, I thought since it was (I think) only compatible with Asus monitors, then they'd make it only work with their gpu's.

G-Sync isn't just for Asus monitors: "partners included Acer, ASUS, BenQ, AOC and Phillips" http://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/technology/g-sync/technology

Gigabyte 290-OC (1040/1250) (non-X)

Living in South Australia - Has not gone above 80*c @ 1100/1250.

Usually sitting around 72-75*C and pretty quiet, my PSU @ load makes more noise than my GPU.@ load.

Stock clocks/Voltage it sits around 70-72*c Max.

Never had issues with it, not that loud, about the same as my older HD7950.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz
