What are these things!?

For the life of me, I can't figure it out.  What are those wing clips on psu extensions?  like here..

They look like a clip to keep the connector secure or something but it doesn't do anything!

Actually, they release the connector seal when pushed so you can plug it off easily I think.

 

This is much more common approach though:

But the one pictures is the female part of an 8 pin extension... The clip pictured in the OP would be providing the other part of the hook you pictured... What would they be use for in that situation?

Same thing, I guess. I mean not all PSU's have that release clip and it takes a ton of force and strain on the connectors to plug it off, so it may be there to avoid that.

It is called....eh hem wait for it......tension clips......it is to hold the male connector securely into the female connector...i don't see that as a that's what she said joke, quit it.

No, look..  I posted the female end..  If you put an 8 pin  male plug into it, it wouldn't touch the wings on the side.
