haha projector very nice! i thought i was one of the only people that used those things.. anyway looking at that i dont see anything oc wise that would kill the psu which means more likely then not it was just a defect. whatever you do dont open the unit up just get an rma number and send her in :)

So I woke my PC up from sleep today and there was a really loud explosion noise and a white flash just like if a firecracker had gone off. I've been using this PC for 2 years now and it has worked fine leading up to this. The lights on my motherboard still glow but pressing the power button does nothing. I was running my 3570k at 1.4 volts so I figured it was probably that but I tried a paperclip test on my PSU and the PSU seems to be dead. My PSU has only black wires so I followed a guide on Corsair's website about which pins to bridge to test the PSU and the fan I had plugged in did not power on. I did not think it would be my PSU though because the power button on my motherboard is illuminated so it is obviously still receiving some power from the PSU. Below is linked my PSU that I thought was very high quality, it says it has a 7 year warranty so if the PSU is the problem I'm assuming I can get a replacement. Any and all help is appreciated, thank you.

PSU has gone bang IMO maybe one of the big caps.

It's very very likely the PSU. It could have blow out other components as well. It's really the only component liable to explode. Try another power supply in it. Also smell the PSU. Does it smell like hot glue?

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Do you think I should open the thing up and see if I can see the damage or just send it in?

Whats the rest of your specs? if i had to guess the psu went bang however cpu at 1.4v wouldnt be enough to load and kill that thing unless the rest of your system is crazy power hungry. If you look at my sig youll see i use a corsair 850watt with sli 780's oc'd and over volted and my i7 oc'd at 1.34 volts without anything going bang

I doubt the overclock had anything to do with the failure. It can just happen. I had a nice cooler master catch on fire once.

Send it in once you are certain it is the problem. Opening it voids the warranty.

Don't open it as this will void the warranty, it may be possible to see through the grille with a flashlight what has happened, there may also be an odour from the unit.

If it is covered by warranty then try to confirm as above if you can that it's the unit and send it in.

I unfortunately don't have another PSU to try it out with. I just went and took off the PSU casing and it seems fine to me and there is no smell that I can detect.

I had the same today  Was using my PC and it suddenly turned off for no reason. Didn't turn on anymore but the Mobo lights were illuminated. I set up my PC with my backup PSU and its up and running again but the PSU is too crappy to use my GTX770 :/

Also tried to jump my PSU with green+black but it just clicks, fan spins like 1 round and nothing after that. Gotta RMA it :(

Alright thank you everyone for your help, I'm going to mark this as solved now and finish filling out this form for an RMA number then send it in. Hopefully it didn't kill any of my other parts along with it :)
