Please help me! What is the problem with my server?!

Hi,

I'm trying to set up a MC server for me and my little brother to play on. I would like to NOT use hamachi so my friends can join in too, but no matter what I try the server just keep being unable to connect to.

So far I have done the following:

1. Set up the server with a world, no ip address in properties, standard gate.

2. I have portforewarded the gate set in MC server properties to the correct internal ip, my laptop as thats the PC running the server.

3. I have my external ip to connect with.

4. I have set up a new rule in my firewall that should let the gate be able to connect through.

5. I have rebooted the laptop as some said it might help Java run properly.

What am I missing? What more is there that could be the issue?

set the ip in the server.properties file to your local ip, on your router port forward pot 25565 on tcp and udp and then connect to your external IP.

first I'd like to ask if you are on the same network?

Second, if not, I'd recommend you use a vpn of some kind if you are not on the same network. It's simply easier. An easy one a lot of people use and I have used myself is Evolve

https://www.evolvehq.com/welcome

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

I can second using evolvehq. Its good for setting up a local server. The only down side about using evolve that it can get quite laggy. Plus, all players will have to have evolve aswell to connect to the server. I would gladly help because i know how frustrating it is when your setting up a MC server and nothing goes right. (Pulled out so many hairs because of server probs lol). Anyway I would like to know what server version of MC your running and are you able to connect to the server? Or is it your brother having troubles connecting?

Didn't quite catch if that was sarcasm or a serious question.

"1. Set up the server with a world, no ip address in properties, standard gate."

If I'm not misstaken 25565 is the standard gate/port for MC

Just making sure... have you gone online and tested if the ports are open?

If you can connect to the server using localhost but not your ip then the ports aren't open

No, that is the point. I cannot connect at all, and the gate is said to be closed even still I have both forewarded the gate and made an exeption (new rule) for the port in the firewall.

What is your network setup?

You should try googling how to port forward your router, maybe you did it wrong (I know I have before)

I think i know the problem. Are you the one that's having problems to connect? If so, when adding your server to the multiplayer section are you using your external ip or local ip? Coz the server host(Plus any computers connected to the same network) has to use their local Ip. eg 10.0.0.3 or localhost. Please let me know if that was the case.  :)

Example #2

set the ip in the server.properties file to your local ip, on your router port forward pot 25565 on tcp and udp and then connect to your external IP.

You don't have to change the serverip in server.properties to your local ip anymore, just leave it blank.

When port forwarding port 25565, you probably have to specifty one of your local IPs, use the IPv4 address of the PC you're hosting on

For your friends to connect, they can use your external IP (Port is not needed, unless you're hosting multiple minecraft servers from your house)

For your brother to connect, he can use your IPv4 adress

For you to connect, use 127.0.0.1 or just 'localhost'

I don't know what you are using for your server, whether you're using the default minecraft server client or craftbukkit, you have to check if your minecraft client or server is up to date.

If you're using cracked minecraft clients, set online-mode to false in your server properties
