Should I get a new MOBO or an SSD?

the21robot

I was going to upgrade a part for about $70, right now I have a dell mobo with 2 ram slots, 1 full size pci express 2.0, Micro atx (I have a 200r though), 2 fan headers, not front usb 3.0 support, green pcb, 4 sata II ports, no raid support, Bad chipset, no water cooling support, no crossfire support and I am running out of USB hubs. I was thinking of getting a AsRock z75 motherboard ( or a SSD ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820178455 ) . I want to know if Raid 0 is really an good and if I am better off getting a new mobo or a SSD. So, should I get better peformance or better compatibility and flexibilty (Keeping in mind that I can upgrade to a i5 3570k).

That's a hard choice. I would get the SSD even though you only have 4 Sata II and no Sata 3 ports.

The motherboard probably satisfies your needs.

Or I would save up till you can buy both. The SSD does need a new motherboard to work properly.

Maybe you can find a cheap Sata 3 motherboard on Ebay?

Also, don't worry about raid 0 until you have two HDDs or SSDs.

I wouldn't recommend 'raid' 0 anyway.

Don't run a raid 0 with two 1TB HDD!

That's a horrible decision, run a JBOD at most.

I think you should wait a little while until you save up enough for a decent Z77 motherboard so when you do upgrade to an i5 3570K you can overclock it to get the most performance out of it. For now your Seagate 1TB 7200RPM HDD should be fine but with SSD prices dropping a lot recently you should try and get one as soon as you upgrade your motherboard.

My Current Build:

Intel i5 3570K @ 4.4GHz 1.11V, Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, Asrock Z77 Extreme4, Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1600MHz, Samsung 840 EVO 250GB, Asus GTX 760 DCII Overclocked, Corsair CX600M

if you want a K cpu,i suggest going with a 100$+ z77 mobo,that have beefier vrm

or you can get the z75,get an i5 3470 and with the z75 mobo you can oc the cpu to 4.0 even if its a locked cpu. but thats only if you have the oc bug, stock is fine

I would get the SDD.. I got a nice ASRock Z77 a year ago for 120 so it should be cheaper by now save up for a nicer MOBO then settling for a cheap one.. get the SSD and save for the MOBO.

I would personally just take your time saving up. go for the MOBO first then the SSD. And get a decent z77 mobo doesnt need to be fancy shmancy but it will give you a little longer life span on your 3570k through OCing and the sata II won't limit your SSD as hard when you eventually get it. i mean you still have 2 decent hard drives that you can set into raid 0 for the time being for an additional boost of speed while you wait to get the SSD : )

My Rig "Corsair air 540, MSI Z87-G45, i5 4670k, EVGA ACX 780, Gskill sniper 2x8gb 1866 memory, Corsair CX500m modular 80+ bronze, corsiar h100i, toshiba 1.5tb HDD." / Peripherals "Acer H226HQLbid Black 21.5" (Main monitor), Acer S200HLAbd Black 20" (auxiliary), Razer blackwidow ultimate 2013, razer naga 2013, razer goliathus 444x355 speed edition, Sennheiser HD8 DJs"

Get a new mobo matey, by the sounds of it, even if you did get an SSD, you could use it fully cause of no Sata 6. Though I could be wrong.

I have that board paired with a 3570K and a Hyper 212 EVO and I absolutely love it. I haven't had any problems and it is a great budget Z77 board. Plus, I am quite pleased with it's overclocking ability.

Yes, had that mobo before and should it (for a z87 mobo) it's great for a budget and overclocks pretty well

Yeah that's good, I feel like too many people write of asrock boards. They really aren't that bad. I mean they kinda used to be but they have gotten a heck of a lot better lately.
