Are you sure that the router isn't blocking it?

I don't know what ports Comcast blocks, but my ISP doesn't block it for me.

Comcast only blocks SMTP on residential -- Port 25 -- Not RDP -- Port 3389.

Go into your Firewall/Router and port forward 3389 to the machine at your parents house. Make sure you set that machine to have a static IP address.

Try setting up a lan.. (Hamachi) and then connect.

Is your modem also acting as a router? Easy way to tell would be to check the external IP address from your router configuration. Also make sure any internal firewalls are allowing 3389

Sounds like a PEBCAK error to me.

I agree.

Make sure you have a version of windows that supports Remote Desktop (Win 7 Home Premium/etc won't work.), and that it is enabled in System Properties -> Remote Settings.

Unsure about comcast, but some ISP's don't allow such programs he will have to double check before using this else it may end up quite badly for him and his internet. :P

sounds like windows firewall could be on...

The chances are it's not the firewall. As it says in his first post, comcast his ISP blocks his current method of remote desktop and he is looking for ways around this.

Without I am guesing affecting his ISP's terms of use.

I've used rdp over comcast before, I had comcast before switching to Time Warner

They throttle torrents and used to throttle netflix, which is why I switched. RDP worked just fine for me

Windows firewall isn't always obvious and most people even forget it exists.

Yes it depends on were you live though. I know were I live if you use alot of one port, they start to look into it and somtimes ban or limit the port.

Look if your are worried about your ISP spying on you or restricting your access to the internet then i would suggest set up a permanent vpn(openvpn) solution..

And you might wanna take a look at privatetunnel.com

Set it up with DD-WRT...

I know that were I live, my friends have had to ring up there ISP as they had banned some ports that they were using a lot of data on. To the best of my knowledge I think they were using BT, but I can't be 100% sure.

You can find the list of blocked ports at http://customer.comcast.com/help-and-support/internet/list-of-blocked-ports/

What kind of modem does your parents have?

I'm still positive this is user error and you haven't set something up correctly. Like the link in the previous post from Forren clearly shows -- RDP is not blocked.

You can change the port for RDP if your still thinking otherwise,

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306759

Check your firewalls, and port forward rules.
