We are planning to build a server PC and I was wondering weather multiple MC servers will use more that one core?

Just so we can decide what CPU to get either

With servers more cores are better, but mincraft likes more powerful single cores. What is you budget for the server? Maybe you could fit an i5 4440

If it's just MC get a Athlon 750K (not a bloody APU -.-) 16GB of RAM, 1TB storage, a cheap network car with 2+ CAT 5 and install Ubuntu.

That will be the best bang for the buck.

Getting a i5 for a MC server is like throwing money away.

So we should buy a gpu as well as a cpu, btw im one of the people he is building the server with. It will have an ethernet cable as internet and we have a couple of free hard drives and a free windows xp os.

<p> AMD FX-8350 CPU, Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0 Mobo, Corsair Vengeance Pro 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory,Samsung 840evo 120gb ssd, Samsung 840evo 256gb ssd, Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB HDD, Gigabyte Radeon R9 270X 2GB Graphics card, Fractal Design Define R4 w/Window (Black Pearl) Case, Corsair CS 750W 80+ Gold PSU, Windows 7 Home Premium

No! A GPU is useless on a PC dedicated to being a server, you'll never use it.

EDIT: If you also get a cheap CAT 5/6 card you will have less chance of lots of connections lagging you out (you plug several ethernet cables in).

EDIT NO 2: Don't use Windows XP, download Ubuntu; it's a free, little- no performance hog and it's easily moddable.

To be quite honest you don't sound like you know what you're doing..

So how are we supposed to plug a screen in? You need some form of graphics to output into a screen, an apu is cheaper than buying a cpu and a gpu.

All CPU's have a video cards on board, the majority of FM2 boards (the Athlon 750K is FM2) have some sort of video out.

That means you can plug your monitor in...

Not all cpu's have integrated graphics. The majority of FM2 boards in fact do not have graphics integrated onto the motherboard.

As of 1.1.0, Minecraft servers can use multiple cores.

What kind of server are you running? Vanilla? Mods? Number of slots open?

Considering the whole idea of the FM series is integrated, gaming capable graphics, i would say they do..

I've also never came across a CPU without on board video, even my FX 6300 has on board video.
