Can not keeping Windows up-to-date decrease performance?

Just been curious. My PC seems to not output the performance it 'should' be and I never update Windows, could this be contributing to it? I'm running Home Premium (i believe) of Win7 by the way. I've checked for updates and apparently I am missing 51 'important' ones.

I'm updating now, but just am wondering if this was having an effect.

I rarely update it because it is annoying to have to restart my PC each time it wants to update itself.

updates can also decrease performance, in windows 7 there was one specific update that gave windows a bunch of private info regarding your computer and activities and it decreased performance by a load. I don't trust windows and therefore I only update once I know updates are good and ready to be used on my pc (for windows 7 that's no update at all since they're useless) Not doing updates can not decrease your performance, however if you do not have any anti-virus protection or malware protection, you will have a problem

Win8 fixed that for the most part.

Updates arnt useless by any means and win 7 is no exception.

not updating won't do anything to your computer, updates are not as essential as people make them out to be and the update I mentioned above also made some copies of windows (legit copies) say that they are not genuine and would have the windows is not genuine watermark, what I had to go through just to fix that was probably illegal, but better than reloading windows.

Degrading performance is most likely due hdd getting fragmented or something eating memory. You'd better run some system sweeps. With updates there's option that they are applied when powering system down or applied weekly/monthly only.

Updates are only once a month, that's only 12 times a year, that's only 12 restarts a year, I'd say that is a good trade off for having lots of security holes fixed, set them to notify but never install then you can install them as soon as soon as you leave the room for a short while, or set them to auto update and all you need to do is hit restart.

Scenario: you start you computer up it says you have updates, next time you go for dinner, the loo, ect. a few min before you go set them updating, then when you leave hit restart, they will be done before you get back.

Yeah I suppose it's not a huge deal really. Still a minor annoyance sometimes.

Ty for the suggestion.

you must have some low specs I have never really noticed it also even win7 can tell when you doing something and it doesnt interrupt. Win8 is even better than win7 for then and only the super major updates need a restart. It can also pull the system out of sleep or hibernate and do them if yo give it permission.

This happens on big updates on a core2duo which I had.....

But now I run win8.1 and fx 6300 and there have not been any large updates where i could have got such slow down and even so I have a good processor now so it is not a problem now.!!!

Windows updates does not reduce system performance (not supposed to, not as a goal, it does happen however, but that is rarely, and is usually fixed with further updates).

The goal of the updates is to ensure that all potential or discovered exploits which can compromise your computer or your network, does not affect other systems. If your computer turns into a zombie PC, meaning that it works fine, but starts DDoS attacks on the back or other harmful attack to your network or system or online services your use, you are fully responsible of that action. Sucks, but that is life.

But I have an anti-virus, and firewall software! if an attack compromises your OS, it has full control of your system. your anti-virus, your firewall software are as useless as a can of spoiled tomatoes for you.

They wont' be able to detect anything, or do anything. These are serious attacks. They are extremely rare, but happens. It usually happens with people with old or not updates OS's, whether be Linux, MacOS or Windows.

In addition of security update, (hence why many are marked as critical or important), you have, as mentioned by others, bug fixes which help reduce system related problems for some or all.

The reason why you need to restart your computer, is because you cant' update a file being in used by your system. This is not a Windows limitation. This a computer in general limitation.

Sure you can add a system that can interact with loaded system files, and can unload and relaod them for an update automatically, and dramatically reduce the number of restart, much like we are enjoying with drivers today. But, this adds a layer, and that means, reduce system performance in implementing this system. Remember when Vista was released, how many people saw a visual performance decrease in gaming.. and I don't mean on day 1, where drivers were not optimized at all, as the core is no longer based on 1993 Windows NT 3.x, but is rather completely new, with a new driver interface system?

Fun times. Do you know why we had this performance decrease. It was to DRASTICALLY reduce, BSOD's as now Windows can reload crashed drivers instead of being tied up with the kernel (core of Windows), and so if it crashes or bugs out, you see a BSOD screen, and lose all your work. Today, getting a BSOD is most likely to be a hardware problem, because of this new fancy system. It made us require more powerful computers, but in 3 years time, it seriously pushed OEMs to stop ripping off customers with over priced, under powered components, and push hardware manufacture to target these high performance target for even their lowest end component, ensuring that even if you have the low end stuff, you have a great Windows experience. So while people moan all day about Vista, we do get to enjoy a Windows core that is not only significantly, to a point it's seriously not funny, superior in every way in terms of security and stability, but less reboots.

Maybe in the future such layer will made, but until then. You need to reboot your computer here and there. Microsoft is improving this in small steps. Windows 8 systems reboots rarely, and gives you 2 days notification in yellow text at the corner of the screen, at the login screen about the need to reboot. And now, if you choose to ignore, NOW it will annoy you to reboot.
