So a few of my old friends from high school started talking about making a game.

We've come up with the idea of a Metroid / Mega Man style game that's an RPG with Diablo loot system.

So basically a side scrolling RPG shooter.

What would be an optimal game engine to do this in? That's accessible (easy to use and preferably free).

Desktop: Intel i5-3570K (stock) | Asus Sabertooth Z77 | G.Skill RipJaw 16GB 1600MHz | Samsung 840 120GB | EVGA GTX 680 SC+ 2GB | Fractal Design R4 | Windows 8 Pro (soon to have dual boot Mac OS X)

Retina Macbook Pro : Intel i7-3840QM | 16GB 1600 MHz | 256GB SSD | Nvidia GT 650M 1GB | Mac OS X 10.8.5

Well Unity and Unreal Developer Kit is free but I don't know if they can exactly do this but I think they can.

It's not really an engine, but the XNA library for C# is fantastic for making games.. You'd obviously have to program though, and I'm not sure by what you mean by easy either, so this may be above what you wanted.. I find that it's really great for anyone interested in making 2D games with a lot of customizability still while still having some of the mundane stuff out of the way. It also lets you not only develop for Windows but also lets you develop on Xbox as well. I highly recommend it.

It's also free for educational purposes.. (I think if you want to sell the game though you may need to buy a license for the IDE)

unity, cryengine 3, ue3, and source are free from non commercial use (selling the game) so those are a few option there

this is one of the greatest thing that has happened to me recently, and it happened on this forum, those involved have my eternal gratitude http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/198850-update-alex-got-his-moto-g2-lets-get-a-moto-g-for-alexgoeshigh-unofficial/ :')

With a bit of code tweaking, UDK can be used to make a 2D side scrolling gaWell

Well that's a good thing to know for certain now.

I have made a few game engines if you have an XP machine you can check out eclipse (it's ok) it uses Visual Basic 6..yes I said 6. Or UDK is also good and is much more modern and has better graphics.Making your own is also a good idea.  I created my own engine for side scrolling game nothing came of it . It uses Visual Basic 2010. I also made a 3D MMO with C++ which is nice.  Good luck mate.
