Hi LTT! I currently am stuck with a networking issue and want to ask you guys for some help!

So, I live in a 3 story home, with all the bedrooms on the top floor, the living room on the mid floor and my living area on the bottom floor.

We pay for 1Gb wifi and are using the router provided by our ISP.

My gaming/streaming PC is strictly wired connection to my router, and I also have my PS4 wired.
However, I do use wifi for all other things (I am the main internet user in this household)
I used to live on the top floor, where I also had my PS4 and PC wired, however, the router was on the top floor with me and provided adequate coverage to the rest of the house below (nobody used the bottom floor of our house).
I now live on the bottom floor and since I am the main user of the internet, and require a wired network for my PC, the router has also come down with me.
But now the other housemates do not get the best signal/fastest internet on the top floor. So since I still need my PC wired, I hooked up a Wifi extender configured under a different SSID on the middle floor.
The coverage on the top floor is better now, but the speeds aren't the best, and certainly are nowhere near the speed we are paying for, using the extender (average 5-15Mb down, 3-5Mb up).
Before we upgraded to this plan and got this router from our ISP, we were using a third party router as our primary, which actually has 3 antennas, but now that router is just collecting dust as we are using this new one, which has no visible antennas.

My main question was if I could somehow hook up the old router we used to use, and set it up upstairs on the bedroom level, as a secondary router. I want devices to automatically connect to the secondary router when
they have a weak signal, and use the coverage from that router as it would be much closer to the devices using it. (Possibly without the use of the extender)

I may mention as well that our modem is also on the bottom floor with me and has always been there. I usually just set up the router through the SAT cable ports on the wall and am good to go.

My main router is a Hitron CODA-4582U Router (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz)
The router I want to use as a secondary router is a TP-LINK AC1750 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit router (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz) Archer C7
The wifi extender is a D-Link DAP-1330 Extender

It's worth mentioning that I cannot run ethernet throughout the house and have the router located back on the top floor, I need a different solution.

I don't know much about networking, nor do I know how to do this really at all, so try to explain things to me in the easiest way possible please, and any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks ahead of time!

You can use a second router as an access point, just turn off the dhcp server on it. Personally i would never buy extenders. They are pices of crap (My opinion).

Edit: You will have to pull up atleast one cable. or place the router in the middle of the house and pull cables down to yourself. Extenders will not work as you have to many obstacles to actually get a decent signal. To even use a second router you'll need a WAN cable from the first router.

I would try creating a lan bridge to your router. That way you only use the ISP device as a modem and your device handles everything else. This is assuming your router will provide adequate signal from downstairs to top story.

If you're interested in a product please download and read the manual first.

Don't forget to tag or quote in your reply if you want me to know you've answered or have another question.

Since you had the router on the top floor previously, does this mean that it is wired for ethernet or is it just a VDSL/Cable connection? If it is ethernet and you are able to network from the bottom floor to the top floor, then you could setup your spare router as an access point. However if you want to use the same SSID for your main router and this new access point, roaming will not work. You will need either an access point with smart roaming or else use some kind of mesh wifi system. I know that the Netgear Orbi mesh system allows for roaming and also has an ethernet backhaul option so you can use it as an AP and use the usual mesh backhaul for clients.

If you are not able to wire an ethernet cable up to the middle or top floor, you might look at powerline. These can be as hit and miss as wifi though depending on the quality and setup of your electrical wires. The AV2000 standard of powerline allow for "up to 2Gb/s". Realistically you should get around 300-400Mb/s with half way decent electrical wiring.
