  1. 1. Which solution would you take, if you had an "unlimited" budget and was starting college this summer (and moving out into own apartment)

    • Getting a razer blade 15 (512gb ssd, GTX 1070)
      1
    • Buying a microsoft surface book 2 and finding a new gaming solution (upgrading old setup and cramming into apartment, going console, etc)
      2
    • Buying a matebook x pro and finding a new gaming solution (upgrading old setup and cramming into apartment, going console, etc)

    • Buying an xps 13 and finding a new gaming solution (upgrading old setup and cramming into apartment, going console, etc)

So, I'm a guy from northern europe, currently scouting to buy a laptop on black friday or cyber monday, along with possibly other things I'll need for when I move out this summer to start uni.

I'm gonna need a portable laptop for uni. Power outlets are plenty at the uni im gonna attend, so battery life isn't much of a concern.

My budget is somewhere between 2000-3000 USD for the entire solution. My current setup is a desktop with an i5, 16 gigs of DDR4 ram, a 650W PSU, a gtx 970 and a couple of drives.

The apartment im probably buying isn't very large, so a huge gaming setup is best to steer clear of.

What would my best solution be? Suggestions in the comments or votes in the poll would be incredibly appreciated.

CUrrently im mostly thinking either razer blade 15 (build quality means A LOT to me), or buying some other laptop, such as the surface book 2, etc and then upgrading my GPU in current setup to an RTX 2070 (will my PSU handle that?)

I'm not gonna be as hardcore a gamer when i begin college as i am now, but I'd like it to run the new CoD, Red dead, Witcher, etc. on atleast high with steady FPS..

I'm also considering going console, grabbing a crazy TV on black friday along with a laptop and a console, and then just doign that instead of the PC master race :/ Mostly just because a flatscreen is pretty, well, flat, so it's good for small apartments

PLEASE HELP; BLACK FRIDAY APPROACHING FAST AND IM PANICKING

as someone that owned a PS4 and sold it, I wouldn't go console. Too much of a headache, and I'll never forgive making me pay for online access.

desktops are also pretty good for doing homework on, especially with dual monitors. I would probably just invest in that and make it work somehow. But if you absolutely don't have the room or don't want to, I would spend big on my laptop because youll be using it a ton. also, theres nothing saying you couldnt get a controller and plug the laptop into your tv once and awhile, especially for rpg games..

I just started uni this August and all I had was a Lenovo Y50 with a GTX860m. I was in a similar dilemma few months back and what I think is, It's really hard to carry gaming laptops around the college. And even if you can, it gets really frustrating when it's break time and people rush to find a spot near power outlets. And any gaming laptop drains fast. I'm pursuing CS so I need a reliable laptop to code anytime anywhere. So, I prefer a thin and light for college stuff and a proper rig for gaming. As you already have one, it's better to upgrade it. Also, you might not have enough time or interest depending on your coursework. Regarding the black friday deals, if you find a really good deal on graphic card, you can go for it. But even if you miss any deal, you can always search for used rigs on craigslist. You got a lot of time. Consider all possible options cause it's more frustrating to not use what we bought than missing a deal. As for me, I went with a 2018 15" MBP base model. I use lenovo for gaming occasionally, like maybe once or twice a week or when friends host a LAN party in DOTA2 or GTA V. Curious to know what you decide.

Thanks a lot for all the input so far :D

@cbhargava I'll be sure to keep the thread updated when I've decided. I'm going to a few different stores to feel the build quality and keyboards of a few different options, which will most likely help me settle on one fairly quickly. You're making a great point about the gaming rig upgrade beign better, and I've also heard from friends studying at the uni im going to, that they haven't had a lot of time to game like they used to, so upgrading the old rig and going for an ultraportable laptop with a nice screen and good keyboard for note taking and working in class projects will clearly be the best route to take. Again, thanks a lot for all the great input guys!

I would recommend looking at the 13in lg gram, as it has great battery life, strong build quality and manages to be pretty light. Not all that expensive for what it is either. Then, get a basic ryzen 5+480/1060, once you have the money saved up, and get the best of both worlds.

Just my two cents, feel free to disagree folks.
