Elitebook 8470P Upgrade Log

comicsansms

I bought an Elitebook 8470P off @iamdarkyoshi at the start of 2017 – It has been an amazing machine, and I will keep it for years and years, because it's amazing.

Original Specs (when purchased it from him):

  • i7 3630QM (It did originally come with a i5 3320M, but he swapped it out for me).
  • 8GB DDR3 (2 4GB SODIMMs)
  • 180GB SSD (Intel 530)
  • 1TB HDD 7200RPM (in optical drive bay).
  • Windows 8.1
  • No discrete graphics
  • 67Wh battery, with moderate wear

Not long after that, I swapped the 8GB of RAM with 16GB (pulled from my old laptop), and the 500GB SSD that was once in my desktop. Once I did that, I decided to remove the HDD, just to make the laptop a little lighter

Start of this year, I bought another Elitebook 8470P, that one had the AMD HD 7570M discrete, so I swapped over my mainboard to get that new fancy CPU (i7 3720QM) and the discrete graphics.

Since then, I bought some 100Wh primary batteries, and 100Wh secondary batteries, to now have a battery capacity of about 200Wh (all day battery anyone), and decided that the AMD graphics was not worth the extra battery consumption, and the fact that the drivers were bugy AF (because last updated in 2015), so bought another 8470P - this one has no discrete graphics, so swapped over the mainboards.

Current Specs

  • i7 3720QM
  • 16GB DDR3 (2 8GB SODIMMs)
  • 500GB SSD (Samsung 850EVO)
  • Windows 10 (Bleh, 8.1 was better), Ubuntu (Bleh, Fedora was better), macOS High Sierra (Bleh, Snow Leopard was a better codename)
  • No discrete graphics
  • 100Wh primary battery, 100Wh secondary battery
  • HSPA+ network card

Currently what the laptop looks like (basically the same, but with lots of bulges. And of course, now with a BD sticker).

Plans for the future:

  • LVDS to eDP convertor, so I can install a 1080p IPS panel (There are NO 1080p 14" LVDS  panels)
  • Modding the speakers (The speakers are on the right hand side of the laptop, and are quiet and not very good).
  • English US to English International Keyboard swap (Keyboard ordered)
  • Maybe an expresscard external GPU setup?
  • Coreboot
  • Probably other stuff in the future
  • 4G network card

Also, please look at this. iamdarkyoshi is doing a lot of cool stuff with a couple of T430's, and he will do a lot more cool shit that what I can. He is the one who got me aware about the LVDS to eDP adaptor boards.

Funny, that's the same CPU my T430 has. Just wish the mail service didn't loose my new CPU and say they "delivered" it

I now have one on my desk, from the 3rd (or was it 4th) elitebook 8470 I have bought.

I may have a slight addiction...

And yeah, that's fucking shit. Not much you can do about it, apart from complain a lot.
