As the title says, how much difference would there between these 2 setups in terms of gaming:

setup 1:

cpu: i5 2400
gpu: gtx 750ti
ram: 8gb single channel

motherboard: asus p8h61-m lx

setup 2:

cpu: i5 4670
gpu: gtx 970
ram: 8gb
motherboard: msi z87-g45 gaming

i may be able to pickup some parts for setup 2, my little brother needs an upgrade.

he currently runs setup 1, and that's showing it's age, pretty badly.
so would setup 2 be a good upgrade for around $250?

Current build: Ryzen 7 1700x, asus prime x370-pro, 16gb gskill trident z rgb, asus rog strix gtx 1070 ti, corsair rm650x, nzxt s340 elite, samsung 840 pro 256gb, 1.5tb hdd.

I don't know how tight your budget is, but you should be able to find a used i7 2600 or i7 3770 if you wanted to boost up the existing sandy bridge system. (That being said, $250 for the upgrades is a really good deal)

But just going from 750 Ti to 970 is pretty substantial alone.

This looks like a significant upgrade. MSI Z87 would allow to overclock so perhaps try to find K version of that chip? Facebook marketplace and Gumtree good places to look.

should i upgrade the gpu first and then cpu next month?
the i5 2400 will bottleneck but the 750ti would hold back even more i think.

GPU first, it should still perform pretty well with the gtx 970. you can try upgrading to an i7 3770/ e3 123x v2 instead of the 4690, the extra threads will help it perform better.
