Hello,

I am planning on upgrading my computer, I don't really have a budget, but obviously I don't want to break the bank.

My current specs:
CPU: AMD Fx8320 clocked at 3.5ghz (stock clock)

GPU: AMD RX 480 Strix (8GB ROG Version)

RAM: 8GB of ddr3 Ripjaws from Gskill

Motherboard: Asus M5a97 LE R.20

CPU Cooler: Hyper 212 Evo

Power Supply: *Unknown Brand* (its not some janky PSU, I just cant remember the brand and its in my cases basement so the only way to find out would be to take it all apart)  550 Watt 80+ Gold Certified.

Right now my computer does decent in games, I have to crank my graphics all the way to low just to get any decent FPS. I am a very competitive person, so I'd rather have 144 FPS and have my game look like minecraft than have 30 and look like something better or whatever (you get my point).

So I was wondering what should I upgrade, I am not really familiar with the concept of bottle necking, my CPU doesn't reach 100% use (usually like 70% if that in games like GTA 5) but i still get really low FPS even though my GPU is still at like 20%.

I am currently looking into getting these components:
CPU: Ryzen 7 2700x

Motherboard: MSI B450-A Pro

RAM: Corsair vengeance (16GB - 8GB x 2)

Power Supply: Corsair HX 750w 80+ Platinum Certified.

and some other things like an AIO, thermal grizzly kryonaut, etc. Totaling about $743 (USA) after TAX on New Egg at the time of posting.

Should I take that $750 and get a new GPU instead? Or would this CPU configuration be good, maybe too overkill?

Tell me what you would switch and why or if this setup is good and why,

Thank you in advance!

Also, if someone could explain to me how to diagnose a bottle neck, that would be great! I cant really find a good tutorial or anything, everyone says different things.

Also for bottlenecks you want to look at the per core utilization because often times games use one core or thread the most and once that thread is at 100% utilization and your gpu isn't then you are being cpu bottlenecked. General rule of thumb is that a gpu is only the bottleneck if it is at 100% utilization so of it isn't at 100% then it shouldn't be the limiting factor.

Another question,

I have a razer blade stealth. Would i see more performance if i were to buy an external graphics card like one from AORUS, they sell a 1080 external unit for $650.

Or would it still be wiser to upgrade my current computer.

It's hard to say. The graphics card would certainly be stronger but the cpu is going to be power limited and thermal limited. If you want high fps you really want a desktop with a decent cpu.

Upgrade your current computer.

The eGPU solution is kind of a waste because you end up getting bottlenecked by the connection and the CPU (somewhat) anyway. Just invest in new CPU, motherboard, RAM.

The PSU you listed is probably too expensive. No need for plat.
