Quad sli

Hello everyone.

I got a little problem that i'm hopping that someone in here can help me with.
 

I'm about to start a little fun project at work with some virtual computers and my boss wants me to use this motherboard "Rog Zenith Extreme" with four 1080 but i don't know if the motherboard can even run four 1080 in sli.

can someone please help me with this?

Yes, the board has both the room and the support for 4-way SLI, however with the release of Pascal, NVIDIA officially stopped supporting 3- and 4-way SLI. However, to use VMs you don't use SLI, you just use four GPUs. It's important to make the distinction because SLI (and crossfire for AMD GPUs) is a term usually only used for gaming.

Yeah, SLI is for games.

You can also populate all the slots with different types or brand.

even different cards, you can mix a 1080 ti with a rx 550 if you want to, so don't worry about that

While valid that in this case you are going just with multi-gpu so there is so SLI going on, it's worth noting that SLI can still offer performance gains in productivity hardware acceleration, it's not 100% limited just for gaming.

 

But like every one said for VMs you're using normal multi-GPU not SLI.

You can do it but you'll need at least an i9 7900X to have enough PCI-e Lanes to feed all cards properly, it won't be cheap... consider a Threadripper 1920X or something.

I don't know about other newer games, but previously, when I tried Strange Brigade DX12, only my Primary card was doing the work while the Secondary card stayed idle. Now so now though< I fired up the game earlier, and was surprised to hear my 2nd card fan kick into gear (adjusted fanspeed in MSI AB) like as though it was actually working. I looked a the OSD monitoring I'd set up with AB and was surprised to see that my 2nd GPU was also rendering. I thought DX12 had no CF/SLi support except through game developer, can't be achieved through driver updates (so can't blame AMD/nVidia). I took a screeshot of GPUZ for both cards (had GPUZ running in the background),  and yes! The 2nd card seems to be sharing workload with the first card, does this confirm that there's CrossFire support for at least one DX12 game?
