RAM Upgrade Questions

So, want to upgrade my RAM in my current rig. When I first put it together, I had to make a compromise and go for a single stick of 16gb ddr4. i knew that it didn't take advantage of duel channel, but I was offered a good deal and didn't want to pass it up. Now I've made some upgrades and now my RAM is the only thing holding back my rig. I wanted to throw in another stick of the same model of ram but it appears its no longer available. So i thought about getting a single stick of 8gb from the same company. it would be the same clock speed and sub-speed. Would this be a good idea or should I look to buy an entirely new RAM kit.

You will likely not be able to post with a 16GB and 8Gb stick, and if the system posts you probably will have instability. If you can't find the same single stick of RAM you will probably need to sell your current stick of RAM and then buy a dual channel 16GB kit, and you cannot get between 16-32GB of RAM, it is either 16GB or 32GB, and I'd be surprised if 16GB was not enough RAM for you.

That last part isn't completely true. there is a reason I'm asking if its viable. i have a friends computer that does have a 16gb stick and a 8gb stick and it works perfectly and all of the ram is accounted for. its obviously not kosher and its a bit janky but ive seen it work.

it doesn't work in dual channel only single channel mode.

It is possible but system stability can become an issue, I'd be surprised if you could run it past 2133MHz. Up to you if it's worth a shot, it's not a conventional configuration and you will need to run it in single channel mode so since the aim of the upgrade is to go for dual channel then it doesn't really make sense.

If you want 32GB of memory, get another 1x16GB stick with the same speed and timings as good as or better than the existing stick. You will not likely be able to get dual channel operation, but you will have 32GB of available memory.

 

Adding a different size memory stick should also work. Again, it should have the same speed and timings as the existing stick. Very unlikely that dual channel will work.
