The Y40 and Y50 run Windows 8.1 and will offer up to a fourth generation Intel Core i7 processor, full HD 1920 x 1080p displays, up to 16GB of RAM, up to 1TB of hard drive space, JBL speakers and Bluetooth 4.0. The Y50 will ship with NVIDIA GeForce GTX graphics while Lenovo will outfit the Y40 with AMD Radeon R9 M270 graphics. The Y50, meanwhile, also offers a touchscreen and can be configured with an optional 3840 x 2160 UHD screen. Both laptops will start at $999.

Opinion: well, damn. The Y410p and Y510p were awesome options for gaming laptops, and Lenovo has managed to top it with the new Y40 and Y50. $999 is a very sweet price for a 4K gaming laptop. Lenovo claims up to 3-4 hours of battery life on the standard configuration.

Awesome that there moving from the GT series of Graphics. GTX gives you much more performance. I'm eager to see the price tag and the starting configuration.

This sounds like a great competition in terms of specs to the likes of higher priced gaming notebooks. Definitely staying on the radar.

exactly everybody will have to dial the res down to at least 1080p its pretty much useless unless you watch 4K youtube or something

No, but you can use 4k for video and just normal use, then turn it down to 1080p for gaming since it shouldn't distort (since its 1 pixel for every 4 pixel (resolution to screen))

At least they are giving you the option and 4k is still 4k, its will still look nice without gaming.

Think the highest end GPU it'll come with is a GTX 860M. Definitely don't expect it to perform well with 4K gaming, since the 4K screen is an optional configuration choice.

The $999 will be 1080p starting, the 4k screen option is going to be a hell of a lot more expensive.
