So, this is more of a current state of affairs sort of post but its nice to make some sort of progress and even nicer to get feedback and advice. Especially when lots of cash is involved. ^^;

This is kind of a tribute to AMD that I'm doing for Quake Con next year. So far the system seems to be running well, when it works that is. I am having some intermittent issues, possibly tied to memory. I can't remember the exact error but I'm sure it'll happen again. It was something having to do with memory pool.

I may change either the cpu to something more period correct or the board and gpus to something more appropriate for the first AMD 6 core desktop chip. While the 5870 and 6970s are period appropriate, it'll be difficult to find a board that'll support 4 way crossfire easily. The 5770x2 is a dual gpu but it really isn't that much better over a 4870x2. Both the 6870x2 and 6990 would be suitable but they're a year newer than I'd like so I'm not sure if they'd be a good fit. That said, those were two of the most powerful gpus of the era, beating out the GTX 590 in compute performance and bandwidth, which is a beast in its own right. There's also the HD 7970 that came out right at the end of 2011 and it splashes both of those dual gpus all by itself. There's plenty of time to still think about it. There's still plenty of components to pull together between then and now.

The second 4870x2 isn't connected cause I doubt that psu is powerful enough to power two of them, it just looks good in the pic so why not. ?

I'm considering doing some cosmetic changes, the main one being a glass side panel but I'm concerned about the effect it may have to cooling performance since one of the radiators, the one that will live in the lower HDD section, won't have access to outside airflow unless I cut vents for it, which doesn't sound easy on tempered glass. Acrylic would be easier but won't look as good. Is plexiglass any different or is it the same as acylic? I might just source a spare panel and just just out what I need from the main body and replace that with glass.
