GPU not starting F@H

Go to solution Solved by Spotty,

Finally fixed it. Issue with both 7.5.1 and 7.4.4 seemed to be related to OpenCL. I noticed in GPU-Z the OpenCL box wasn't checked when I was installing the Nvidia display drivers (downloaded from Nvidia website).

  1. Unplug ethernet cable
  2. Boot in to safe mode
  3. Use DDU to uninstall the Intel HD display drivers
  4. Reboot in to safe mode
  5. Use DDU to uninstall Nvidia display drivers
  6. Reboot in to safe mode
  7. Run Disk Cleanup on C Drive to remove old drivers in the driver repository
  8. Install Nvidia Display Drivers (399.24) (while in safe mode!)
  9. Reboot
  10. Install Folding At Home 7.5.1
  11. Realise that your ethernet cable was still unplugged and then it fails to download the GPU.txt file and your install is borked.
  12. Plug in ethernet cable
  13. Uninstall Folding At Home 7.5.1
  14. Reinstall Folding At Home 7.5.1 - It will now launch the browser window to allow you to put in your user information and start the folding tasks.

@TheRandomness if you're still having issues with 7.5.1, check GPU-Z to see if OpenCL is checked.

Finally getting those sweet, sweet points.

image.png.356807bbb7a5ca4dd70e69a19adaee83.png

Wanted to do some GPU folding, but the GPU task won't start. It will download the work, attempt to start, receive an error and then immediately shut down and attempt to download a new work.

Here's the error log for one of the attempts: (coloured red error messages)

Any idea how to get the GPU working? It's a 1080ti so I'm sure it'll do a fair bit better than my 6700k CPU.

Just installed a HD7970 to test if that would work, and that gives the exact same error. Can't even start processing.

I've DDU'd the display drivers and reinstalled fresh installs of both AMD and Nvidia display drivers.

Why wouldn’t the newest folding client start? Although this issue ist nicht directly connected to that one

7.5.1 wouldn't start.

Install the program (Express install), and leave the start folding checkbox ticked and hit finish on the install. At this point the web client is supposed to open and ask you to put in your user details, however it never opens. Opening the Folding Control client gets stuck on Connecting and never starts. Tried restarting the client, restarting the PC, reinstalling, redownloading the installer and reinstalling again, clearing the appdata/roaming files and reinstalling, installing new display drivers, and so on - None of which worked.

I think it was the same issue that @TheRandomness had with his install. @Opencircuit74 suggested to use an older version, so I used 7.4.4 and with that version it was able to install properly and start - except the GPU task doesn't start.

Googling the error I found this post over at overclockers: http://www.overclockers.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-790316.html

People with similar errors found:

1. Bad nVidia Driver (fresh install recommended)

2. Memory Errors

3. Bad sector on HDD where Swap File Was

4. Instability due to CPU Overclock

5. Instability due to GPU Overclock

The FAHClient is very sensitive to errors and while an aggressive overclock may just throw an artifact in a game it will cause F@H to fail.

People also mention needing to re-install the FAHClient after changing GPUs as core optimizations may be installed at install based on detected GPU

I've done new Nvidia installs (couple of times with different versions, DDU'ing in between)
It's running on an SSD which isn't having any errors, though I've just bought a new SSD which will arrive in a few days so I'll try to install it again when I reinstall windows on the new SSD
Tried with and without CPU overclocks
Tried with and without GPU overclocks (And it's happening on AMD and Nvidia GPUs, so it's not an overclock or driver issue)

Tried disabling XMP on the memory

I guess I'll try pulling some memory sticks out and seeing if it's an issue with the memory. Could be a bad stick, but I highly doubt it.

If I can get it running, and depending on thermals, I may end up running the HD7970 as well. Not sure how many points that will be worth though, and I'm pretty sure it's going to melt my 1080ti.

There's really not a lot of space between the cards... The plastic fan shroud on the 1080ti is touching the screws on the back of the HD7970 PCB :D

(Excuse to cable spaghetti below, I had to plug in extra PCIe cables for the HD7970 when I was testing with it so they aren't properly managed)

Urgh ... I don't think melting the 1080Ti is worth the extra points. That card is going to get really hot really fast with that AMD toaster underneath it and less half slot gap

You can't run AMD and NV cards in the same machine for f@h in 99% of cases. Get the hd 7970 outta there and it will chooch good and proper.

I'll probably just stick with the 1080ti for now. The cards are just too close together and I really don't want to suffocate my 1080ti.
Judging by what you get with your 7950, probably not worth it if I'll be getting less than 200k ppd with the HD7970.

You would have to throw in into another machine or use a VM with GPU pass-through anyway... AFAIK
