My internet speed

So whenever I do a speed test it tells me that I have 40 Mbps however whenever I start downloading a game or update on steam (or anywhere else) the download speed never goes over 2 Mbps.

 

Any reason for this? 

And anyway I can “fix” it?

There is no fix for that. Steam show the speed in MegaByte and not megabit.

The speedtest tells you your internet speed in megabits.

Chrome, steam and other programs tell you you're downloading at x megabytes.

What about other downloads? Are they all stuck at 2mb/s? 

Do you have steam throttled by any chance? Look in the settings for a download cap.

There is a difference yes, but in his post he clearly stated 2Mbps with his 40Mpbs

So step 1 is explaining that Mbit =/= MByte

Step 2 would be looking at why his is missing almost half his download speed. But as the speedtest shows he can clearly reach it.

So what is limiting his download speed?

Yes my PC is the only thing connected to my internet. It does go over 2 very rarely highest I have ever seen it was 5 but it spikes back down instantly, average is 2 (all this is on steam btw)

I just opened the download settings and i am wondering is the “ limit bandwidth” same as download cap? 

 

And also there here is an option to display downloads in bits (I checked it so it’s more simple)

Yes, that's the same thing. 

But that's not steam, is it? Do you have the problem on other platform such as Origin or Uplay aswell? Or Chrome?

On everything, that is steam but I have a skin for steam

Can you make an overview of how your network is set up? 

How everything is connected and with what cables etc.

It’s just a router and I have a cable connected from it to the pc. I don’t really know what you mean tbh

Well that's simple, lol. 

Thats weird though. Maybe you should reboot your whole network, i.e. Router and PC.
