Hard drive query

Depends on what laptop, but most probably don't support booting via USB, unless you can set it in the BIOS.

could a laptop without a / with a failed hard drive use a external hard drive with windows

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

 

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

No but you can boot ubuntu or linus using a pen drive.

that is how you do it if you buy it form a store

Windows 8 and higher everything else needs CD/DVD Tho it is possible threw 3rd party for at least win7.

 

Also I bought the DVD version of windows 10, because I know even tho it is lost right now, I will find it... a USB could be lost forever.

No, the OS itself can not usually be booted from USB.  There were hacks for XP and 7 to make it work.

The installer can boot from any USB device.  You can not boot a HDD with W10 installed over USB though.

You can make a windows 10 portable installation and do this, it's not really worth the hassle. LTT did this in a recent video. Windows 10 or linux recovery sticks are worth making if you need a boo tr able recovery environment.
