Does this CPU fit my mainboard?

Go to solution Solved by Pasi123,

Yes, it does fit and your motherboard supports it. But I'd recommend first upgrading the BIOS to the latest version, if you haven't already.

Hey guys,

I would like to know if this CPU (i7 4790k) would fit into my mainboard (MSI G43 Z87).

It has 1150 Socket, but I'm not sure if there is any difference between i5 or i7 socket.

Thanks in advance!

How can I upgrade BIOS?

Every time we upgrade a CPU on the motherboard, we have to install the latest BIOS? This wont be an automatic plug and play type of thing, will it?

Not every time. For example Ryzen 7 2700x works straight out of the box with X470- and B450-motherboards. For the older AM4 motherboards you need to update BIOS for it to work.

And a BIOS update requires a supported CPU, so to update a B350 or X370 board to use the Ryzen 7 2700X a Ryzen (3/5/7) 1(2/3/4/5/6/7/8)00(X) CPU would be needed. In the case of the OP, it's a newer chip (Devil Canyon) unlike the older version (i7-4770K that's a Haswell) that would work with Z87 boards out of the box, so a BIOS update would be needed to use the newer CPU or buy a newer board (Z97).

so for the OP, his options would be to replace the 4790K with a 4770K unless he got a Maxwell CPU to update the BIOS or replace the Z87 board with a Z97.

BIOS tab - AMI BIOS - And the Version 1.B. It's the newest one.

ALSO it seems i accidentally put the wrong link in :D  https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/Z87-G43#down-bios

This one should go to the BIOS tab :D

I see this message (does it mean I have to install it from USB drive somehow?):

Note
You must use one of the following methods to update this BIOS. - Use MFlash to update "BIOS + ME" - Use MSI LiveUpdate

You could use a USB drive or the MSI LiveUpdate software. https://www.msi.com/page/live-update-5-manual

Some debate which one is better. I personally don't know which one is better.

I searched for new drivers and downloaded them with the program but there is no way to see if they were installed lol

Well, you could reboot and go to your BIOS and check the version, and see if it did indeed install it.

Hopefully it did.

I updated and it said I have the latest version now.

I put in the new cpu and the computer is not booting correctly.

It stuck at loading screen and says repair is starting. And then it restarte and after the loading screen I only get a black screen.

Maybe because it doesn't use onboard gpu?

Hmm, your best bet atm is to use the old CPU to access your computer and try to reinstall the BIOS with an USB drive.

This is a common problem so you have nothing to worry yet. Also sorry for these long waiting periods since i can't always access my computer.
