Horizontal Frequency

30 kHz to 140 kHz - HDMI 1.4
88 kHz to 222 kHz - DisplayPort

Vertical Frequency

24 Hz to 60 Hz - HDMI 1.4
30 Hz to 144 Hz - DisplayPort

it isnt, its just the spec of how fast it can refresh the display.

 

horizontal refresh rate is rarely used fpr anything but spec sheets tho.

The horizontal refresh rate is how many horizontal lines of pixels it can update per second. In your example. 88000 to 222000, over DP. Imagine a 1440p screen with these specs. This means you have 1440 rows of pixels to update per second, so with these specs it can refresh the whole screen between 88000/1440 = 61 and 222000/1440 = 154 times per second, which is referred to as the vertical refresh rate.

So while perhaps less useful for us in a practical sense, it's not just marketing talk.

As a note on semi-practical uses of the horizontal refresh rate, it gives you a more complete picture of the maximum refresh rate. Some monitors will support higher refresh rates like 75 Hz, but only at lower resolutions, and are 60 Hz max at full resolution. If you just list "max refresh rate 75 Hz" this information is not conveyed. But with horizontal refresh rate sometimes you can tell :)

 

For example, the Eizo FS2735, which is a 2560×1440 monitor, lists these:

"HDMI: 15 kHz - 158 kHz / 23 Hz - 144 Hz"

 

Look great, supports 144 Hz over HDMI right? Well, I can immediately tell it will not support it at full resolution, because to refresh 1440 lines at 144 Hz, the horizontal would have to be at least 1440x the vertical rate (more actually, with blanking intervals). But 158 kHz is only a little above 1000x the 144 Hz vertical. Hmm, what resolutions do we know that are a little above 1000 vertical lines... :) From this alone I can conclude pretty confidently that it is limited to only 1080p and below if you want 144 Hz over HDMI.

 

Of course, the Eizo manual also tells me directly that it only supports 144 Hz at 1080p or below for HDMI, so it's a bit pointless, but the spec can be informative in some cases :)
