Wanting to upgrade my rig

Hi I am looking into upgrading my current gaming rig into a more engineering centered rig over the next couple years (in college to get a degree in mechanical engineering). I have had my current setup sense 2015, and even then the parts were bought on a budget. 

 

Current Parts 

- CPU intel core i5-4690K

- GPU NVIDIA Geforce GTX 970

- Motherboard H97M Pro4

- RAM G.skill 16 GB x2 

- Storage Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB

- Monitor Sceptre 24" LED full HD 1080P

 

Wanting to upgrade my monitor first to something that can easily change it's configuration for light sensitivity. Then from there I am not certain to upgrade next.

CPU and GPU. Possibly motherboard and RAM, depending on what you upgrade to. 4790K is still a viable and relevant option.

I'd probably look at completely redoing it with something Ryzen or ThreadRipper based, depending on your exact needs.

-Monitor $300 max 

- CPU $650 max

- GPU $500 max 

 Lower the better but i will be working at this upgrade for a couple years
