Server Uses???

Hey guys,

 

I picked up two free servers from work. They're HP DL165 G7's with 2x AMD Opteron™ 6128 (2.0GHz/8-core/12MB/115W) Processor's per host. I'm trying to figure out what I can do with these and make them useful. They don't have any RAM or HDD's so thats something I would have to purchase.

Are they worth throwing a couple hundred a piece into?

G7's.. that's a bit on edge, if you have actual purpose for them you could resurrect them with some hardware, but if you dont have use for them i'd suggest flipping them to someone who does.

Well DDR3 should be pretty reasonable and if you were to run unRAID as the OS you can put x4 4 6 or 8TB HDD's one drive would be parity and the other 3 are all data storage but WOL would be in order as they are pulling some power running 24/7 and I would suspect as with most enterprise servers that they are loud so location would need to be considered then you can run dockers use it as a plex media server for your house and even run some VM's for testing various linux distro's

the question is do you have a problem these servers could reasonably solve?

 

for most people the answer is no and especially because you would need to invest money into them i would rather sell them and use the money for something else

You'll need to figure out for yourself what you want it to do for you before spending the money. You probably won't be running it 24/7 (unless you like a warm room and a cozy high power bill) and it won't be quiet either when hard at work, so you'll also need a space to put them, that also has wired network access.

 

If you don't have any idea what to do with them, then just sell them for $50-100 a pop. That's about realistic for a bare server from around that age.
