8 vs 12 gb DDR3-1333 ram

I currently have 8gb of DDR3-1333 ram in my build and it is becoming a bottle neck in certain games such as PUBG. Im looking to upgrade the ram to 12gb but am not sure if it would drastically reduce performance on my current two 4 Gig sticks in dual channel. Would upgrading the ram be beneficial for my performance? If so should I purchase one 4 gig stick, or two 2 gig sticks? I have a feeling that one of my ram slots on my motherboard is busted so im a bit hesitant to purchase two 2 gig sticks.

My current Specs are:

I5 2400

gtx 1050ti

Acer IPISB-VR Motherboard (OEM board from a old gateway).

2x 4gb sticks of ddr3-1333 Samsung ram

The 2x4 will run in dual channel, the 1x4 will run in single.

Should I look at a higher frequency stick such as 1666 then? Or will I be able to run 2 x2 gb in dual channel as well to get better overall preformance?
