ASRock B450 PRO4 or MSI X370 GAMING PRO CARBON

oahbpn

Recently ordered a Ryzen 1800x. Which of the following would you recommend? Is the MSI worth the extra $40?

ASRock B450 PRO4 AM4 for $90

https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/B450 Pro4/index.asp#Specification

or

MSI X370 GAMING PRO CARBON for $130

https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/X370-GAMING-PRO-CARBON/Specification

Any other recommendations? My location is Canada.

Edit: I plan to also purchase Team T-Force Vulcan 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3000 (PC4 24000).

No.

B450 Pro4 can't hold the power draw of this 8 core CPU without needing extra help on its VRMs. I mean, fans pointing directly towards them.

X370 Carbon can hold the 1800X, but $130 is too expensive considering it's still made of the cheap VRM components similar to that of the Pro4, just more of them.

Can you please suggest a motherboard that has good VRM ?

Are you going for an AMD or Nvidia card? for AMD I would go with the ASRock and for Nvidia I would go with the MSI.

I overclocked an R7 1700 on that board just fine, wasn't able to hit 4ghz though

Budget/Country for the motherboard?

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

How did you end up with an 1800X anyways?

The boards basically go from Basic/Average/Great at $230

Dunno if you can just buy like an SSD or case later at this point, but the MSI Tomahawk board should be fine outside of more extreme overclocking, and a bit better than the Pro4
https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/Y4kwrH/msi-b350-tomahawk-atx-am4-motherboard-b350-tomahawk

The X470 gaming plus/pro are the same basically, pro has slightly larger "Heatsinks" on the VRMs, will also be fine.
https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/8Wzkcf/msi-x470-gaming-pro-atx-am4-motherboard-x470-gaming-pro

But really if you're going to spend more money probably just go all the way to the top with one of the best boards for the platform, otherwise maybe stick to the tomahawk.

I ended up with an 1800X due to my impulses. It was on sale for $230. lol

Thank you for your recommendations.

Asrock ab450 gaming k4 has a decent vrm and is the coolest of the bunch(#according to Steve from hardware unboxed that is),the only drawback of msi is that it doesn’t support offset voltage (believe me , static overclock should n’t be your priority)

there is the link to that video

Thanks for the video. I was just watching it and noticed that the Tomahawk has a lower VRM Temp. So the Tomahawk is better? Please see below:

The Pro4 has a 3(+"3" which isn't properly doubled) phase VRM, the Tomahawk has a 4 phase VRM, that's the main reason to go for the tomahawk, not that phase count is all that matters typically.

I was just about to say that I recommend the B450 Tomahawk for cheap boards with good VRMs for an 1800x :P That's what happens when they start putting X370-F/X470-F grade VRM components on cheaper boards, just fewer of them.

The improved alternative will be the MSI X470 Carbon, Asus X370-F and X470-F. These things are better for overclocking, but not needed to safely and comfortably overclock one.

Fingers crossed ? tomahawk is better in both vrm design and cooling, but if you are planning to overlock it only supports static overclock, otherwise i would have recommend it,on the other hand asrock supports dynamic overclocking and comes  closest to msi’s tomahawk

the effect is far less than you think.

Of course PBO is still no-go.

Not really going to matter for a gen 1 ryzen chip anyways, lucky to get even 4.1ghz on the best boards
