Media File Server

I am looking for a server that can stream movies, tv shows, pictures, and maybe backup some computers. The budget is $600 max. Does anyone know any good severs, used servers are ok, or any good software. I was thinking running plex on an Mac mini, with some external storage drives, but that would not be ideal for transfer speeds.

That would work fine. STreaming moves doesn't need a fast drive(normally 50mbit max, less than 10% of the drive max.

 

A basic synology or NAS box would work fine here, or something like a celeron or pewntium would work fine.
