I just bought a new DSLR and some equipment and I wanted to start editing my videos better and be able to have youtube videos look half-way decent.  But the problem is is that I don't know how to edit or what the best software is.  I don't want to spend more than $200 dollars on software

adobe premiere elements, plugins the sh** out of it as it accepts the same plugins as the standard and pro version. I have a lot more experience with sony vegas but that is expensive, premiere is great, you can youtube the effect you want and you are highly likely to find it with a semi decent tutorial.

Sony Vegas Pro is a good start although it has many programs, that might not be inside your budget. Adobe After effects is more advanced and is for compositing, Adobe Premiere is more or less Vegas Pro but it is more stable it could be out of budget so there is a cut down version called Adobe Premiere Elements. There is free software out there such as windows movie maker.

Honestly I would suggest but do not encourage such things nor do I endorse any trouble you may or may not get in but, you could get both Sony Vegas Pro and Adobe Premiere quite easily "other ways" then spend the budget else where such as a better processor, more ram or some lens for your camera.

There are many tutorials on the internet to learn how to edit etc, forums such as Video Copilot can teach you a lot.

So I spelt something wrong in my post... I don't care I don't read through what I write and I type very quickly.

Sony movie studio is a reduced venture version of Vegas and is like $50. It is really good for a beginner. Sony Vegas has a smaller learning curve the premiere.

I agree with you on the last bit but, you can do more with Premiere so you might gain more in the long run.

True. But Vegas is easier for a beginner.
