My grandpa is giving me his old 4600, it's incredibly slow, however i was planning on upgrading it so my brother could play minecraft etc.

Specs

I would like to upgrade the;

  • GPU (AGP)
  • RAM (DDR)
  • HDD
  • PSU (If needed)
  • Fans
  • OS (Windows 7 / Linux)

I want to spend as little as possible, however enough to play Minecraft at decent fps

Thanks

Will the PSU work ok with the case as it is pre built

Will it get good FPS ?

Apparently you can put a standard psu into a dell dimension 4600.

The 6600gt was a powerhouse back in its day. It should play Minecraft no problem on fast graphics settings.

Would the standard PSU from the 4600 work on the 6600gt ?

Its only 250w. It would be stressed by the 6600gt. You'd be better off buying a new PSU.

Would the 300w be enough ?

Put the specs into http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine and put 20% capacitor aging and 100% load.

I got 350w

I don't know if the 6600GT will work on that machine

I have a Dimension 4600 and I tried a BFG 6600GT AGP and it didn't post with it in there. Probably go with a different card.

If you play minecraft on it, prepare for the studders. A 6600GT may be able to keep up with minecraft, but the CPU will bottleneck the whole process. Also go for 4gb of ram, Minecraft can be a hog sometimes.

Old shit no one cares about but me.

Ram is ddr2 and you said you needed ddr1. also that ram is ECC. server grade stuff. Can't be used on most consumer grade components.

psu is a low quality POS according to google.

I tried 2 different PSUs with the thing. I'd still go with a different card just to be safe.

Could you advise a good card ?

How many ram slots do you have?  Every other report shows that a 6600gt is fine in a 4600.

4 i believe, i don't actually have it with me just now

Do you know if it's a 20pin or 24pin motherboard ?

20 pin

I currently have 1gb of ram and a Radeon 9600 SE in my computer. I wouldn't recommend that for minecraft lol

Doesn't matter. psus that have a 24pin have a break-off type thing for the extra 4pin, and 20pin fits in 24pin.

I know, i was just wondering

The RAM is a bit expensive for the amount i am wanting to pay

Could you find a HDD that will work with around 500gb ?

Thanks for helping so much
