Current system

Ryzen 1700x

MSI carbon x370

2x8GB ripjaws V 3200mhz

GTX 1080 galax exoc

cooler master g750m psu

So recently I decided that I want to switch back to Intel, gaming wise it is a bit better than my current system.

I was wondering if I should go with a i5 8600k or save up for a 8700k.

In the current state I can sell my 1700x and x370 for zar 5500 (375 usd)

I can then buy a z370 aorus gaming ultra secondhand for R2000 (136 usd) and add a i5 8600k for zar 4500 (307 usd) = zar 6500 (443 usd)

I would have to add zar 1000 (68 usd) for the Intel system or maybe I could find a 8600k secondhand for a decent price although they are hard to find

Is this a viable choice? should I consider something else? Should I buy a new or used 8600k?

I live in south africa

Putting all the reasons why you should not do this aside, I would wait until the 9000 series comes out so 8000 series prices drop, and some come up used. I plan on upgrading to an 8700K if I can find one for the right price.

That said, it's not worth your time or money to switch from a 1700X. Your money is better spent buying a better CPU cooler and OCing a little bit, if you care that much. Since the 8600K doesn't have hyperthreading, you're likely to not even see any FPS gains anyways. More likely drops. Noe matter what you do, the difference will essentially be negligible.

Building on the point above, if you're going to do this, you'd probably be better off just upgrading to the 2700x. But if you really want to change boats, you might as well go all-in and go for the i7-8700k. While the i5 is faster single core it's got much slower multicore performance and games like the newer Assassin's Creeds and Cities Skylines that make use of those extra cores may actually see lower performance on the Intel side.

Not worth the upgrade for the reasons above.

You wont see a major boost in performance to merrit this upgrade

If you want a faster CPU, in light of recent price hikes due to intel 14nm shortage,  you are better off waiting for Zen 2.

Thats so not worth it.

But besides that maybe wait until the 9th gen Intel stuff hits the market. Either the 8th gen cpus will get cheaper and you probably will get better performance from 9th gen chips for similar prices as what 8th gen currently costs.
