Hey!

I am looking to move my NAS, thing, server, (idk really at the moment) into a room without an ethernet port. What is the cheapest possible solution to adding an ethernet port without breaking our lease agreement?

 Budget - $50 AUD

Weather it be powerline or an extender it HAS to have an ethernet out!

Thanks in advance!

My Machines:

I know. I need to update this. And I will. Eventually.

CAT5e, or CAT6 would do nicely, yes. Not regular CAT5.

I run a setup with a range extender connected to a switch connected to 3 servers, so I can confirm that works alright. Performance isn't great, but it's adequate. Not going to work with just $35 though.

EDIT: I run a RE450, AC1750 based extender with gigabit capability. I average 50-60MB/s over the network with that over a distance of ~5-7m purely over 5GHz.

RIP. just 300Mbps wireless and just 10/100 ethernet. You must like network transfers of 10MB/s or less.

A nas on a range extender will perform like crap unless you can disable the WiFi repeating portion of it.

Its not a full blown nas.

Just use it to store files for game servers etc so I can remote in and start/edit them.

I'd have to say you jumped the gun here as if its a proper PC based NAS you could probably have just used an 802.11ac PCIe card and gotten WAY better performance.

You didn't even mention you HAD WiFi, let alone what speed it was.

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) Backup: GL.iNet GL-X3000/ Spitz AX Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz) WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz)
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~1200Mbit down, 115Mbit up, variable)
