Budget GPU recommendations.

Go to solution Solved by nsyedhasan,

I'd say go for a 270, a 4GB stick of RAM, and maybe an SSD.

Hello!

I just registered here and I am hoping you guys can help me!

A few months ago I built my first budget gaming computer. A few weeks from now I will be able to upgrade it for the first time and I was looking for some GPU recommendations, since I really want this cutie to please me in gaming. The PC itself is based around the AMD A10 5800k APU, so as you can imagine it has no dedicated GPU and it depends on the RAM for performance(I currently only have a single stick of 4gb  DDR3 1333mhz and while not the best choice for an APU, it OC just fine to 1800mhz and the performance is not bad). I like playing games like Skyrim, XCom and the Total War series, and while they are playable currently I want better performances and stable FPS on higher settings(especially for the Total War games. I just don't enjoy small battles), so a top of the line GPU is not in my mind but I do want one that does the job for these games.

My budget would be exactly $300, maybe $50 higher depending when I get the money and on the cost of the books I need for College.

Apart from the GPU I would also like to have some spare cash left for an extra stick of RAM and just maybe a new fan or two for the case, although its not necessary.(temps are not a problem right now but with a GPU that may change)

I have been looking at the Radeon HD 7850 and the R9 270 (although I may be able to afford a 270x) because they fit right into my budget and I have seen how well they perform, and both leave me with some extra cash for some RAM and a fan. TigerDirect is the only website I know that ships to Puerto Rico so its the prices there that apply to me. (If anyone knows a trusted site that has great deals and ships anything to PR, I'd be glad to know. amazon doesn't ship any of the "most important" components here, just HDDs, screens, and selected brands of RAM)

The R9 270 (2gb DDR5) is currently at $215.99.

The HD 7850 (2gb DDR5) is at $221 and the 1gb version is at $170.60 (I prefer the 2gb versions for Total War games, but I can go for that too)

The RAM I wish to buy is at $47.50 so it fits in the budget nicely with both cards.

Also, take note that these cards, being AMD, are my current preference because of my APU. I have been told that the 7850 has been known to work wonderfully with the A10(supposedly). I can also go nVidia, but AMD is preferred.

My specs are:

APU/CPU: A10 5800k OC to 4.3ghz

RAM: 4GB 1333mhz Kingston HyperX Black OC to 1800mhz

Motherboard: MSI FM2-A75MA-E35 (OC genie is the source behind the overclocking)

PSU: Corsair CX500 V2 500w

Monitor: Compaq WF 1907 1440x900 (scavenged from an old PC)

HDD: Some standard 360gb 7200rpm HDD I scavenged from the old PC(no brand or info anywhere)

Any suggestions apart from those? Which one of the two would you recommend I buy?

Excuse my English, Spanish is my native language! And also, sorry for the wall of text that I have created.(I can't help it, no matter how 'to the point' I try to be, it always happens....)

*sigh* Guys really? I'd be happy to reccommend but it's like every 10 minutes I see a post like this :/

Then don't. Seriously, there's tons of forum members out here so if you don't wanna answer these repetitive questions, then it's best not to :)

Based on what you guys have recommended, I shall go for a 270 or 270x and get the RAM too! and nsyedhasan, I'm not really into SSDs yet. 7200rpm HDDs are good enough for me right now!

Thanks to all of you!

That's the whole point of the forums, people ask for guidance, and we can give it to them, if you don't like helping people then you can exit stage left. That's what support is about, and also don't know what you mean by "gimie an hour or two, gonna try and stop this" means but that is the wrong way to look at it in these forums. We're here to help, not get mad when a new person comes in with a question. We were all newbies once.

To the original post, the 270/270x is definitely a good choice, if you want something along the NVidia lines, a 760 should be right up your alley, even a 770 is in your price range

It's a great choice, 8GB is definitely going to help with performance boosts. Don't knock the SSD, theres nothing like booting your computer in under 10 seconds :) Also I put BF4 on one and loading maps in MP is so much faster, I'm typically the first person in a game because of it

definitely the 270 or 270x out of the 2 the 270 = a 7870 rebranded

^

If the budget gets tight, I'd say to get the 7850 1GB especially if it allows you to get a ssd.

The 270/270x is that tremendously better than the 7850.

I'd really recommend an SSD. You will enjoy the boost.

Perhaps in the future I shall look into getting one, but I'm not thinking about getting one right now. I'm more of a 'space over speed' guy and my next upgrade is going to be to a much larger HDD(At least 2tb) since I tend to pretty much keep a backup of everything and every game, thanks to the really slow internet speeds I get in my area. It does sound interesting to be able to boot up quickly, but since I always just turn on my PC and go do something else(usually make me something to eat), I spend a few minutes away, so when I come back its all ready to go. Also, loading times in games don't bother me either. My old PS2 with an almost dead DVD drive made sure I wait patiently for all loading times (It took about 3-7 minutes just to boot into Mercenaries: PoD's main screen).

I will eventually get an SSD, since that is the future, but I shall wait a few years until I'm able to get significant storage space with the performance in the same drive. Price drops would help too!
